Princess Resurrection #1

April 12th, 2007

Wait a minute… I’ve seen this show before…

You’re stuck with me for this one, and I hate everything, so tough beans.

Princess Resurrection is not going to go down in the record books as one of Madhouse’s best animated shows ever. Truthfully, it’s like the mix of Darkstalkers (or Nightwarriors depending on your tastes) and Shakugan no Shana. Male lead is killed in episode one until his chest flame is relit by the sword wielding heroine, only for him to immediately get himself ‘killed’ and brought back to life again. This time, though, instead of a flame haired girl, we have a gothic lady and her loli golem/robot maid.

For a Madhouse show, the animation is pretty painfully simplicit. Most disappointingly, the fights were a bunch of simple stills with pretty much no action animation whatsoever. No faults with the artwork really, but the seeing a bunch of stills of a loli hitting dogs with a tree tend to not have whatever effect as they were going for… especially while there’s an albino werewolf lurking in the background.

The music was also very minimalistic which often got in the way a little more than it helped. Although I did rather like the OP. The ED on the other hand… seemed like Ali Project went out of their way to be as irritating as possible, although kind of something of a rarity, most of the ED was animated and pretty well done. It would have sufficed perfectly well as an OP for most other shows.

So, anyway, in conclusion, the first episode can be summed up as “Shana with much crappier music and animation.” I’m not familiar with the source, so I’m not certain whether or not it’s going to rise above this, but from this episode, I somewhat doubt it. It had multiple chances where my interest was temporarily aroused and it could have done something… anything… to try to reel me in, but it settled for mediocrity and some particularly bad cliches each time. I think my eyes actually rolled back in my head after Hime told Hiro they were going to be together from now on and he yelled “eehhhhhhh!?” while the camera panned up.

Meh, says I. MEH!
