Casshern SINS #04 — Angels and Devils
October 22nd, 2008
Delicious swords.
Impressions:
After last week’s angst fest, it’s nice to get back to the action with the slightly battle crazed yet infantile Sophie, nicknamed the Angel of Destruction by the robots. She finds meaning in life by fighting and causing the destruction that already surrounds her. If the world is falling apart, then that must be how life works. Naturally, she’s hunted by the robots because she’s a bit too eager to cut them all to ribbons. Casshern refuses to fight her, and even rebukes her for her attitude, leaving her confused and a bit heartbroken, but later comes to her aid when she’s almost killed.
After the robot wisely trundles off, she declares that she’ll make Casshern understand her feelings and attacks him… because she loves him. She’s no match for Casshern, but he just stands still and lets her impale him. She doesn’t understand why he didn’t stop her. She finally says that she doesn’t want him to die. A bit later, Casshern tells her that he’ll save her and she asks him for his name… she tells him it’s beautiful and tells him to live on.
First off, they changed the pre-OP shot of Luna and Casshern this week. This time, they just showed the two of them with Casshern covered in blood and grunting. Sexy. The thing that really stood out to me through this episode was the music. Sophie was a little hard to listen to just because she speaks almost exclusively in the third person and… of course… slightly crazy, or at the very least, far more immature than she should have been. Still, I’d be happy to see a bit more of her around as she adds the most innocence and acceptance of the world, outside of the eye-scarring Ringo. At least there’s somebody who’d rather be slightly unhinged than pack it in and write sad poetry in the corner. Of course, I do carry a bit of a torch for slightly insane swordswomen, and the bigger the sword, the better, so she pretty much gets an automatic bye on the standardized Aroduc Scaletm. I liked that robot too for that matter. He’s probably the smartest one of the lot so far, and I think the only one aside from Friender who hasn’t tried to eat him. I think taking the focus off of Casshern also helped quite a bit with this episode feeling a little bit better than the last couple.
