Goku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei #01 — A Proper OVA

October 17th, 2008

Traps, panic, and evolution.

Impressions:

Honestly… I forgot this existed, let alone that it was coming out this week. It was very enjoyable all around, and definitely one of the better Zetsubou Sensei episodes, although it really was a bit think with the KyoAni references, especially given that I only saw one nod to Hidamari Sketch and none to ef, though I haven’t really tried to pull out every single costume from the Halloween part. After opening with a Pythagoras Switch parody and then an especially spastic version of the OP, we got Valentines Day and the evolution of ‘honey traps,’ based off the saying "you can catch more flies with honey yada yada." I absolutely loved Chiri’s proper chocolate heart. Otherwise though, mostly about how Otaku have become wily and will refuse real female flesh (how dare they ignore Kaede!) because they know it’s too good to be true. Lots and lots of jabs at KyoAni through this part.

Part two was all about how things can seem calm on the surface while there’s really a lot of effort being put into them. This was easily the weakest of the three parts, but seeing Itoshiki training to hang himself still got a chuckle out of me. Kafuka’s weird moon wars at the end was also bizarre enough to be relatively entertaining. The third part started with Halloween and segued into how things change from their original, and we covered everything from evolution to Michael Jackson to manga art. Poor original Itoshiki looks so… escaped from 1970. Also, Chiri makes the most absolutely adorable little witch ever. I’m surprised that she doesn’t have a giant proper black hat though.

SPASTIC OP

Needs more Rin, and more Harumi in a ZAFT outfit. :D Mmm…. Sunrise references.

I’m almost positive that Miyako from ef is standing amongst the crowd during the Halloween segment, along with many other referential characters.

Speaking of OVAs, seems Pani Poni Dash is getting one as well although it’s more like a DVD special for the release of the box set. March 2009.

    More plain girls please.

Eh? First I’ve heard of it. Got a source on that? I’m not seeing anything recent at the usual places.

Actually, she’s cosplaying Kiki from Kiki’s delivery-service, who never wore any sort of hat. ;)

Might be a bit late on this one but I heard about it from [url]http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=48455[/url]

Hmm that’s a bit odd. My comment isn’t showing up on the side bar and the submit comment process had a sort of authentication step of having me type in numbers from a displayed image.

Are url tags not implemented? Edit: Oh never mind.

Itoshiki-sensei’s 80’s character design is a reference to Koji Kumeta’s old style of drawing.
