Hyakko #01 — Gundam Seed in Disguise
October 1st, 2008
And just like Gundam, it’s another show I have little interest in.
New Season Disclaimer:
I’ll make a post for almost all new series (barring sequels) with a wrap-up and bullet point opinion of each once the premier week is over. Remember that these are just my kneejerk reactions to the first 20 minutes of shows, many of which in genres that I don’t even particularly like, but I do believe in giving every new series at least an episode to interest me.
Impressions:
Well, far be it from me to argue with Hinano’s declaration that this was tremendously boring… so I won’t. It was immensely boring for about 18 minutes, followed by a very brief spat of electric guitars and violence. It’s a shame, because the actual class looks a lot more interesting than any of the four apparently main characters were. They seriously form up the cast of Manabi Straight on a truckload of ritalin. There’s the quiet girl, the prim and proper arrogant girl, the athletic girl, and the goofy girl. All we’re missing is Baby Spice and this could be the most generic Japanese pop idol group around.
Also, like seemingly every goddamned show this season, the OP was a montage. Sorry, I was getting massive A/V desyncs when I tried to rip it, and would rather watch Casshern after this than try to work that out. The ED is probably better suited for a Gundam opening than this show, especially given the constant barrage of twangy guitars and soothing pianos lulling you to sleep for the first 90% of the episode. Art and animation was alright. I was curious what school in Japan would have such a giant campus the middle of what seems to be a palm tree jungle, but at least the greenery was something to look at and wonder while we got to listen to Ayumi’s endless droning internal monologue.
So yeah… I was rather underimpressed by this one. It got a little more exciting at the end, but I’m already tired of the four main characters and I doubt I’d be able to stay awake watching them week after week. Maybe Totali will be on it if he doesn’t succumb to ToraDora… which appears to already be a lost cause.

Ahhh, so what the frick is this show about again? Hellz bells anyways, lets hope this season doesn’t suck as much balls as the last few did (minus slayers, that at least didn’t make me brain meats hurt due to bad anime cliches etc.).
I’m curious, and if you don’t mind me asking, what exactly is the aspects of mecha and sci-fi that turns you off to such animes so much? I respect your own tastes, but I’m more curious to the root of this distaste. (reading lots of books on Psychology right now, trying to apply what I’ve learned a bit)
