Kannagi #01 — Termites, Leaf Blight, and Sap Rot

October 4th, 2008

What are veneral diseases you can catch from a tree? I’ll take Potent Potables for $1000.

New Season Disclaimer:

I’ll make a post for almost all new series (barring sequels) with a wrap-up and bullet point opinion of each once the premier week is over. Remember that these are just my kneejerk reactions to the first 20 minutes of shows, many of which in genres that I don’t even particularly like, but I do believe in giving every new series at least an episode to interest me.

Impressions:

What really surprised me here was how horrible a character Jin was. He spent most of the episode staring at Nagi’s butt or trying to look down her shirt… or being so frightened of panties that he nearly had a panic attack. He’s basically a spineless voyeur. Hell, he was even going to feel her up while she was sleeping. So he’s arguably a date rapist in training too. I’m not familiar with the source material, so I have no clue if he gets better or at the very least, less stupid, but he’s stamped right from the same mold as a thousand other terrible terrible romantic comedy protagonists that deserve to be dropped into Mt Doom. Nagi was a little bit better, but again, nothing that we haven’t seen before, most recently in Wagaya no Oinari-sama. Maybe the other characters are better or add something to the mix, but I’m really not seeing the appeal of this at all after this episode.

Production was what you’d expect from A-1. Dodgy art in places, but much more elaborate and emotive animation than you normally see. It’s pretty much the same general animation style as Birdy, only with more arm flailing instead of leaping alien superwomen. Honestly though, it really does make me think of Wagaya, only with better art, animation, a more irritating male lead, and a girlier female lead, although it doesn’t take much to be more feminine than someone who occasionally turns into a man. Maybe the other characters add something into the dynamic, maybe I’m just crazy, but I really just don’t see what all the hype was about for this one.

I’m pretty sure Totali has self-committed himself to covering this anyway, which is for the best since I’d far far far rather watch ZKC and Index on Saturdays anyway, probably even Kemeko too. Sorry though, I broke the program I used to cap streams by daring to update it this morning, so I won’t have Index ready for a little while yet.

    I’d look down Nagi’s shirt.

We already know that you’re a deviant though.

Clearly, and by a million miles, the best show of the season so far. Yamamoto Yutaka, the director (creative force behind Suzumiya Haruhi, fired as director of Lucky Star after four episodes) appears to be the comic genius I thought he was. Brilliant comic timing and storyboarding (he directed and storyboarded this first episode himself). And excellent animation. The beautiful movements, especially of hands, must have blinded me to any dodginess. All I saw was excellence.

Outstanding seiyuu work by Tomatsu Haruka as Nagi. Jin is a type, but he is a great version of the type, so far. His reticence about underwear, etc., was a common meme done very well. Overall, he does not appear to be a wuss to me. He took her in without the excessive shyness we’ve seen so often elsewhere,

  • Westlo says:

But how much credit can you give Yamamoto when he’s pretty much just following the manga? Than again considering how so many adaptions butcher the manga I guess thats a good thing… and a skill in itself…

  • Reikalover says:

I just have to say this is by far, the worst looking raw of the new season, it even beats AT-X’s poor quality airing of Shikabane Hime. Well, it must be an analog capture. I’ll wait for MXTV’s pretty upscale.

I’d still watch it for this:
