Kurozuka #01 — Move Over Sakura Saku…
October 7th, 2008
Kurozuka’s got an OP even harder on the ears than you.
New Season Disclaimer:
I’ll make a post for almost all new series (barring sequels) with a wrap-up and bullet point opinion of each once the premier week is over. Remember that these are just my kneejerk reactions to the first 20 minutes of shows, many of which in genres that I don’t even particularly like, but I do believe in giving every new series at least an episode to interest me.
Impressions:
First off… jesus… that’s the worst OP I’ve ever heard. You should be ashamed of yourself, Madhouse.
At least on the bright side, it would appear that all the money not being spent on One Outs and Box of Cherry Blossoms is being channeled into Kurozuka. I think that it’s got the big name draw from the manga anyway. Aside from everything taking place in the middle of the night with no lights anywhere, it looks gorgeous and is animated excellently. They do abuse the CG a bit heavily, but at least it’s top notch CG instead of cheap Gonzo knockoff floors and stairs. I thought that they could have used the music a bit more effectively. The few tracks they did have were pretty decent enough, but there were long segments with absolutely no music or background noise whatsoever, and during important scenes (like Kuromitsu’s introduction) the absence of any noise whatsoever made the scene feel very awkward.
All that said, it’s really just not my kind of show(tm). I can only take so much serious drama at once, and this appears to have that in spades. I’ll probably give it a closer look once it finishes and I can just pretend like it’s a long movie, but things like this just can’t hold my interest from week to week. I certainly wouldn’t begrudge anybody else for being a fan though as it really does look excellently done and apparently has a strong manga source behind it from what I understand.
What the Hell is Wrong With You, Madhouse?
