Yozakura Quartet #02 — Rin Sucks

October 9th, 2008

At least give her a new outfit so she’s not in something garish from 1910.

Impressions:

Well, on the upside, Rin will probably stop being a pissant little whining brat now. On the down side, we have to sit through an entire episode of her angsting it up pretty hardcore which even rubs off on cheerful Akina for a little bit. What the hell is wrong with you, Rin? How dare you make the town’s super sayajin sad? Some girls held you down and burned you with an umbrella, fine… I get it. Even in Shigofumi with its over the top bullying, nobody decided that genocide was the answer. Rin was honestly just about one artifact of unspeakable power and a spine away from being a whiny Final Fantasy last boss… but like I said, thanks to Akina being smart enough to blast the shadow that attached itself to her instead of her, now she’s all happy. I suspect mood altering drugs personally. Forget the magical mental healing, I’m just glad to get the bitchiness out of the show.

We got introduced to a few more characters around town this episode, and confirmed that yes indeed, Kyosuke is a butler and an oni. I wasn’t sure if he could actually release his sealed powers without going berserk but eh… there you go. There’s also an evil looking shota more or less in charge of the town who keeps a harem of assorted combat maids and waitresses at his beck and call. I have no idea why he dresses up like an elementary school student, but I can only assume that it’s some kind of kinky sexual role playing with his harem. Nothing else really makes a great deal of sense.

Brief Summary:

When he was young, Akina’s grandfather took him out to show him how to dispel a youkai. The little beasty was tied up and started thrashing around in pain when it started and Akina tried to run to its aid. In the present, Rin is presented to the head of the town and more or less granted amnesty to stay. Rin goes on and on about how humans and youkai should kill the other without really ever saying anything intelligent until Akina comes by to pick her up. She’s still pissed at him for being a human so yells at him when he’s doing his tour guide routine and then runs off.

Outside the town, the evil furball shoots electricity at the barrier. He gets right up close and blasts a ton of energy at the barrier, then falls back exhausted. Shota-boy makes a note of it, but shrugs it off. Elsewhere, Ao, Kotoha, and Touka are working on a new mascot. Akina comes back and Kotoha teases Touka a little bit for her crush on him. Meanwhile, Kyosuke and Hime find a lost Rin. Thinking that Kyosuke’s human, she goes into her "human’s suck" speech, though he offers to show that he’s an oni. Akina and Touka catch up to them, and Akina teases Kyosuke a little bit until Rin bitches him out for having fun and runs off again. She manages to make it to their office this time where Ao and Kotoha are putting her papers in order. Kotoha mentions school, which sends Rin into a flashback about getting bullied and burned with a heated umbrella poker.

After the eyecatch, something’s been going berserk in town. Hime and Kyosuke are on the scene, but she’s annoyed at Akina’s absence. He’s moping it up in his room, thinking about the youkai that he saw his grandfather kill as a child and wondering if that really is the relationship between them. Hime pops in and yells at him a bit, saying that he’s the one that brought all this together yada yada yada. Lots of yelling "I KNOW THAT" back and forth.

Around the same time, a little electrical impulse runs towards Rin. After it hits her, she goes berserk and creates an expanding energy field that destroys everything it touches. Kyosuke and Kotoha try to hold it back, but can’t. Hime tries to hold it as well, but then Akina shows up, and ignoring them all immediately charges his power and blasts a tunnel to Rin. He tries to reason with her, but she’s not really paying much attention. He charges another blast, but misses her and arcs it around to hit her back, pulling out a shadow that had attached itself to her. He fires another blast, destroying the shadow and powers down. Hime catches Rin as she falls. Akina welcomes Rin to the city.

The next day, Rin cheerfully delivers lunch to the office, even smiling at Akina.
