A Certain Magical Index #08 — Running Animation Budget Exhausted

November 22nd, 2008

Pudding animation, still okay.

Again, I’m tired of waiting for a real raw and am supposed to be going out to see Quantum of Solace with friends in about half an hour, so… whatever.

Impressions:

I rewound that scene in the cafeteria about three times before I came to the conclusion that the magic in this episode doesn’t make a lick of sense and just stopped caring. That may or may not have affected my opinion of the rest of the episode, but I’m willing to err on the side of "no." Lots and lots of talking and explaining stuff this episode too, and it didn’t help that Aureleous (or however you spell this guy’s name) used his abilities in a very animation budget friendly manner to just disappear and reappear whenever Chuckles tried to punch him. I did get a chuckle out of Deep Blood Himegami’s ‘magical stick,’ actually a cattle prod… and from Touma uppercutting Stiyl to cancel the brain crush. That was just outright cruel.

The animation this episode though… something else. That brief little sequence of Touma and Stiyl running through the hallways was absolutely terrifying. I’m crossing my fingers that it means that they saved up the budget for the big boss fight next episode and/or the upcoming Clone Wars, but… ew… Seriously… just… ew. I expect that kind of look from Team Rocket, and stiyl is nowhere near as hot a redhead as Jessie.

Alright, this is going in a bizarre direction, so I should probably wrap things up before I’m making comparisons between Index and a squirtle. It was a better episode than the last couple, but the running animation was horrible and while the magic/science exposition was never really totally sensical in this show, it went up another level in abject insensibility this episode. I gave up trying to even follow it, let alone understand it partway through.

Seriously though… that running animation… what the hell was up with that?

Preview:

Touma’s only weakness, 17th century pistols.

  • ...... says:

    BAH! IT’S ANOTHER DAMN FILLER EPISODE THAT DOESN’T EXPAND ON ANYTHING! I’M IN DESPAIR!

  • Freeter says:

    Maybe JC Staff realized more people care about Toradora and are reallocating the funds to that instead.

  • Yue says:

    Redshifts to blueshifts then back again… for this its worth it.

  • Rawr says:

    Slice of life animes don’t need much budget to get by. Action animes usually do. So why would they make such an absurd reallocation?

  • anon says:

    Why would they not?
    The people making the decision might not even watch the shows.

  • Aroduc says:

    Both shows have terrible ratings anyway (as does all anime that doesn’t air during prime time) and I’m pretty sure nobody’s scouring 2ch to find out how their show is doing.

  • serenade_beta says:

    @first comment

    What are you talking about? It’s no filler. It’s perfectly from the novel. Heck, rather than extra stuff, they’re cutting stuff out.

    @freeter
    That’d be a disaster. That show can go and function on low funds as it needs. <–by me, who dropped the show and doesn’t care how low the animation in Toradora gets
    And Toradora doesn’t need it, since it’s just simple daily life with a violent girl, two idiots, and… yeah, cough.

  • scott says:

    yea, I’ve ended up just skipping through all the nonsensical conversations -.- you’d be amazed how much better it makes each episode (even though it only leaves 10 minutes left)

  • Maxime1007 says:

    Funny how it’s not a filler, fucking stop reading the manga crap and start the light novel, you’ll find yourself surprised that it’s in.

    A certain magical index is based off the light novel of the same name, not the manga.

  • Nanaya says:

    Then by all means, stop bitching and link us to an English translation of the novels!

  • Kikaifan says:

    Calling it ‘filler’ has nothing to do with whether or not it was in the source material and everything to do with whether they’re doing anything to advance the plot or just wasting time.

    I mean the whole episode is like ‘go into building, get removed from building, go back in’. All that happened was that they heard about whatshermikoface’s motives… which are important, but I don’t think they required an entire episode of pointless running around a building to reveal.
