Yeah, it's all but finished. Nothing new starts airing properly until the 3rd (although about 3 shows have 12/30 specials). I just need to pack up the PVs. Scheduled for Dec 27th.

For what it's worth, Hantsuki is consistently rated as one of the top 10 light novels of all time. The ending wasn't the only reason, but it was certainly part of the reason.

Anyway, I think you're looking in the wrong spot: the actual closure came about in the scene between Kuze and Yuu on the beach just before Yuu heads out to Australia. The use of a 3rd person, the "observer," to draw out the future of the main characters is more a novel-technique rather than an anime-technique, but it's effective and one that I often use whenever I write.

Oh, there are problems with melodies of course, notably the overuse of over-the-top directing, but it also compares quite favourably with memories in its scripting, especially its ability to draw themes and attack it from different angles, and its excellent integration with memories. Those space fillers you mentioned were actually brilliant moves to connect the plot, characters and themes of the two cities/stories/movements together to form one. These instance were where you realised ef was a true ensemble piece, a tale of different sets of people walking towards the future.

In case you have missed it : remember how Yuuko onces remarked how Yuu tends to 'blink' when he lies? Go back and watched the final scene between Yuu x Yuuko and pay attention to his eyes.

Just because another show did it worse, that doesn't make this good. It wouldn't have taken much but all we got was a brief scene where they don't even interact with each other. Even Hiro had more lines this episode than Kuze did.

I'm surprised you didn't think there was closure to Mizuki/Kuze. Ever heard of Hanbun Tsuki? It's a similar idea, with the surgery only delaying the inevitable, and both main characters knowing that the day where they part WILL come, but both being determined to make the most out of the remaining time.
