The Girl Who Leapt Through Space #01 — I Don’t Think So, HAL

Why don’t AIs ever stay sane?

New Season Disclaimer:

I’ll make a post for almost all new series (barring sequels) with a wrap-up and bullet point opinion of each once the premier week is over. Remember that these are just my kneejerk reactions to the first 20 minutes of shows, many of which in genres that I don’t even particularly like, but I do believe in giving every new series at least an episode to at least try and hook me.

Impressions:

Uh… huh. My guess that this is a Keroronian plot may not have been far off. Instead of being some kind of sci fi adventure or space opera, this is more of a slapstick harem comedy. Of course, the harem lead in this case is a somewhat unhinged AI with vague delusions of grandeur and is the size of a battle ship, but hey, weirder things have happened. Most of the episode was extremely boring as we’re introduced to a slew of characters and sweaty heaving loli breasts that I’m sure won’t be important to anything because I don’t recall seeing a single one of them in any of the promotional material. No OP this week either, further adding to the genre confusion.

Production values were high, music was good… all of what you’d expect from a Sunrise show. I really could have done without the squealing cutesy chibi robots. They were grating on me after about 2 minutes and were still around from start to finish. If the damn thing had stayed inside the maid’s head, I’m sure it would have been more bearable. There was a lot of incessant CG. It was all very well done, but it’s personally something that I just don’t like seeing because it creates a clash between the animation styles. Your mileage may vary depending on how much CG annoys you.

Overall though, I certainly can’t say that I’m particularly impressed. It’s really hard to get a good read on what this show is even about or what the plot is going to be thus far though. I’m pretty sure Shishidou’s arranged marriage is not going to be as important as her little spaceship, despite the 8 minutes to 1 minute ratio of time spent on those portions. It was nowhere near as fanservicey as I expected it to be, but I was also not expecting the crazy AI to jettison toilets or the cops to be drinking out of sippy cups either.Whatever your expectations were for the show, rewrite them, and maybe try again next week to see if this actually gives any idea of how it’s going to proceed. I don’t think I’ll follow it because Slayers is starting on Mondays next week, and two shows of cutesy chibi things in one day would kill me, but if they actually focus a bit and give it some direction (and kill the damn chibi robots), it’ll probably turn out to be a pretty decent little show.

the animation and the girls look pretty, but where are the male characters? I guess pseudo-HAL is all the man the girls will ever need.

  • kearsie says:

hey, it’s fukujun, he’s gar even if he has a mechanical penis

  • kearsie says:

I just watched it that was really, really bizarre…some of the most bizarre sci-fi fanservice anime I’ve seen in a while. Naked big breast agents are still common, but talking bread-like interface robots? Schools for those things? Bill boards in space(well, that’s common too)?

Talking narcissitic hikkikomori colony-controlling robot? I was kind of expecting colony drop or something, but no, we get fabulous feathers in space

Talking about fabulous, Sunrise, you just couldn’t resist putting some of them fabulous guys in there could you?

  • Sheba says:

It should have been a head-in-jar. Just to add to the corny factor.

  • Anonymous says:

Daisuke Ono is in this, Jun Fukuyama is in this…

The manliness in this anime is too much for me to take…

    … I liked it

Odin’s Expectation Of Sora Kake Girl: Jun Fukuyama. – Yay! I got what I wanted! (And for some strange reason I suspect I’m not the only one)
Not annoyed and not impressed either, I don’t expect much except for entertainment. I think it’ll deliver that much at least.
