07-Ghost #01 — Respec’ Knuckles

April 7th, 2009

It’d have been a bit less gay if they hadn’t crawled into bed together the next night.

New Season Disclaimer:

I prefer to give every show a chance. You never know when your dream-eating insect wielding Mai HiME knockoff will turn out to be a psychological romantic thriller, or the strange moeblob show will be full of wit and urine jokes. However, my preferences are still my preferences, and while I’ll endevor to at least convey why I do or do not like things, there are genres of shows that I just plain don’t particularly enjoy. My opinions are based on nothing more than a gut reaction to what I watched literally 10-15 minutes prior and should be construed as nothing more and nothing less than that.

Impressions:

Man, what’s the point of even giving him amnesia if he’s immediately going to have a flashback to whatever his traumatic little event was? Either it’s just painfully bad writing to kick it off, or it’s rather blatant foreshadowing that Aya-tan killing his father isn’t quite what it seems. I wouldn’t be surprised either way considering the general calibur of writing in anime. Given the way that Teito convulsed and screamed while having his visions, I’m going to just go ahead and assume it’s all just a head cold.

It wasn’t a bad episode by any means, just so full of bad cliches that it’s probably also the plot for Final Fantasy XIII. Vaguely homosexual buddies with rare magical powers, a touch of amnesia, a magical widget, some patricide, airships, the arrogant antagonist and his legion of mooks, a tutorial battle against some oaf, all we’re missing is a white mage and oh hey… there’s a gaggle of attractive young nuns in the ED and next episode preview. How convenient. Production was alright. Not the best effort Deen’s ever put forth and both the action scenes were relatively short.

Well, the biggest thing that this show has going in its favor is that it airs on Monday, when absolutely bloody nothing else is on. I may follow it just out of sheer Monday boredom. Right now though, it seems painfully average all around with an extra helping of cliche on top.

14 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • Ah, the amnesia thing. It seemed like a cliche to me at first until I found out that there’s a reason for it and also why that particular part only returned during that time.

I love the manga and I think it’s a good series. Hope you’ll cover it xD Hehe.

  • Taki says:

I’ve been waiting for this series,or would I say for Frau.I really hope it doesn’t turn out to be a yoai.

Been reading the manga ever since I hear about the anime.

  • Lollerman says:

Feels a bit like Chrome Shelled Regios, huh? Cept Layfon never actually had amnesia.

  • Taiyaki says:

    P.S. This is shounen-ai.

  • XgenAd says:

this is not shonen ai. at least the manga wasn’t and if the anime follows with the manga then this isnt either.

  • Ritsuka says:

It’s not shounen-ai…,but it goes the Nabari no Ou way, if you know what I mean. You can’t deny that.

  • jeffng9 says:

the manga looks good so i have quiet an expectation for this series in anime.

  • Hatsu says:

It’s not NEARLY as gay as Nabari no Ou. These two are best friends, not two guys who randomly met and decided to give up everything for eachother. Best friends being close actually makes sense.

  • Aroduc says:

    Two friends who sleep together.
    Dot dot dot

  • jayers says:

I think the term is innuendo or a least a lighter version of that.
I don’t know. I read/watch a lot of yaoi and BL titles but this doesn’t strike me as gay at all (to my disappointment obviously).

  • Hatsu says:

I didn’t watch it yet but did the anime show them sleeping together? I thought his friend just took his bunk, so maybe he just moved down to the lower one since his friend decided to sleep on his.

  • Ritsuka says:

@Hatsu: Yeah could be with Mikage, but you just wait for him to meet his Yoites. /manga/
Plus for me it’s the same, Miharu got to slowly know Yoite and became best friend…

What I meant was that the lack of female and the bromance everywhere is like with Nabari no Ou where everyone keeps wondering if it’s shounen-ai or not while watching the characters go tender on each other every chapter.

Still I love this, great twists.

  • ChaosDivine says:

Imagine you’ve lived your life with no family, no memories, you have ONE friend only, who likes buging you by being all tochi feelings but still he is the only one that has the guts to be best friends with a military slave. Its your last day of school and who knows when you’ll see each other again… Would it be wrong just to share the bunk?
Guys don’t go out screaming yaoi until you read the manga or watch the anime a little bit further. Its a good story, give it a chance. Teito becomes cuter and wait until you get to know Frau, he is simply cool. XD
