07-Ghost #01 — Respec’ Knuckles
April 7th, 2009
It’d have been a bit less gay if they hadn’t crawled into bed together the next night.
New Season Disclaimer:
I prefer to give every show a chance. You never know when your dream-eating insect wielding Mai HiME knockoff will turn out to be a psychological romantic thriller, or the strange moeblob show will be full of wit and urine jokes. However, my preferences are still my preferences, and while I’ll endevor to at least convey why I do or do not like things, there are genres of shows that I just plain don’t particularly enjoy. My opinions are based on nothing more than a gut reaction to what I watched literally 10-15 minutes prior and should be construed as nothing more and nothing less than that.
Impressions:
Man, what’s the point of even giving him amnesia if he’s immediately going to have a flashback to whatever his traumatic little event was? Either it’s just painfully bad writing to kick it off, or it’s rather blatant foreshadowing that Aya-tan killing his father isn’t quite what it seems. I wouldn’t be surprised either way considering the general calibur of writing in anime. Given the way that Teito convulsed and screamed while having his visions, I’m going to just go ahead and assume it’s all just a head cold.
It wasn’t a bad episode by any means, just so full of bad cliches that it’s probably also the plot for Final Fantasy XIII. Vaguely homosexual buddies with rare magical powers, a touch of amnesia, a magical widget, some patricide, airships, the arrogant antagonist and his legion of mooks, a tutorial battle against some oaf, all we’re missing is a white mage and oh hey… there’s a gaggle of attractive young nuns in the ED and next episode preview. How convenient. Production was alright. Not the best effort Deen’s ever put forth and both the action scenes were relatively short.
Well, the biggest thing that this show has going in its favor is that it airs on Monday, when absolutely bloody nothing else is on. I may follow it just out of sheer Monday boredom. Right now though, it seems painfully average all around with an extra helping of cliche on top.

Ah, the amnesia thing. It seemed like a cliche to me at first until I found out that there’s a reason for it and also why that particular part only returned during that time.
I love the manga and I think it’s a good series. Hope you’ll cover it xD Hehe.
