Asura Cryin’ #01 — Nice Sleeves

April 2nd, 2009

You know what they say about a girl with big sleeves…

New Season Disclaimer:

I prefer to give every show a chance. You never know when your dream-eating insect Mai HiME knockoff will turn out to be a psychological romantic thriller, or the strange moeblob show will be full of wit and urine jokes. However, my preferences are still my preferences, and while I’ll endeavor to at least convey what I do or do not like, there are genres of shows that I just plain don’t particularly enjoy. My opinions are based on nothing more than a gut reaction to what I watched literally 10-15 minutes prior and should be construed as nothing more and nothing less than that.

Impressions:

Well, I can’t say that I’m overly impressed with this one. It just wasn’t engaging at all for almost the entire span of the episode. I get it. There’s a suitcase trunk, and it’s pretty mysterious. Apparently it contains muck that turns into a mecha. I’m glad we spent so much of the episode talking about it. The real mystery are these people’s sleeves. How much starch does it take to get them that huge? I also already want to tie Tomo down and give him a haircut. What the hell is that thing dangling on the side of your head? Damn hippies. I was rather disappointed that they didn’t do anything creative with Misao either. You’ve got a ghost gimmick… do something with it. She’s just there the entire time, like some kind of supernatural-detector detector with no other purpose.

Things got a little more exciting towards the end, but it still didn’t feel particularly well put together. We’ve got at least three… if not four or five… factions all attacking Tomo and Misao over the suitcase at once. Then again, I’m not sure any amount of explaination would have helped out a Mexican standoff between a pyrokinetic mobster, firearms Ciel knockoff, and mecha-summoner priest, along with a heterochromatic priestess lurking in the window. It was produced decently enough, although there really wasn’t much to animate honestly. I wasn’t wowed, but there were a few times, especially during facial closeups, where the artistic perspective seemed a little wonky.

I guess it wasn’t bad, but they’ve got a lot of work ahead of them to pull this together, or at the very least, have it make a little more sense. I’m willing to give it another episode or two to see if it can pull it off, but there’s not much here that excites me thus far.

…Still don’t get what so fun about being first… and I thought this show was pointed more towards the romance genre… not mecha….

  • moritheil says:

The plot sounds like a mess, though it is, as your screencaps show, a very pretty mess.

I think it’s possible to make a show that is a complete mess insofar as the plot goes and still have the product turn out to be an enjoyable ride. Baccano comes to mind, with its multiple factions and highly improbable coincidences. But again, as you point out, the odds are not in favor of that.

have’nt got the chance to watch the series yet, but looking at the screencaps, quality seems good to me.
might consider a few more episodes before deciding to drop it or not

  • Yue says:

This deserves at least another episode of attetion, i guess. ^_~

  • Irie says:

I tend to like the character designs and felt the story was involving. Realize there’s too much going on for a single episode but it does have a chance of being pretty good. I’m not a big fan of mecha based stories but this one has a little fantasy to work with.

Hopefully next one won’t disappoint. This series is based on 11 novels so far. A lot of material. Hard to make a decision on what to watch until the week is over.

  • Tensho says:

Ok, I just remembered I read chapter 1 of this manga.

  • karasu says:

-story was all over the place; scenes were skipping around
-art is meh at parts, animation is okay…
-wtf is with the mecha D: They look buttfugly.
-and goddamn, the shooting scenes are completely unrealistic

  • Silver says:

    @ karasu

Disagree with you on almost everything except the last one. Don’t know but did the senpai used rubber bullets?

  • Asura Machina says:

I have now seen two episodes of this anime and I believe it has the makings to be a great anime. I have already started my research into the original light novels and manga versions. I just hope people will not rule this anime out, its going to be great.

I like how they made a concerted effort to point out this show’s similarities to Higurashi with that twin/shrine maiden joke.
