Warring Era BASARA #01 — Cheeto Anime

WHOO WHOO!

New Season Disclaimer:

I prefer to give every show a chance. You never know when your dream-eating insect Mai HiME knockoff will turn out to be a psychological romantic thriller, or the strange moeblob show will be full of wit and urine jokes. However, my preferences are still my preferences, and while I’ll endeavor to at least convey what things I do or do not like, there are genres of shows that I just plain don’t particularly enjoy. My opinions are based on nothing more than a gut reaction to what I watched literally 10-15 minutes prior and should be construed as nothing more and nothing less than that.

 <Aroduc> Oh good
 <Aroduc> Ghetto raws of Basara
 <Totali> lol
 <Totali> oh
<Totali> i misread that as Cheeto raws
<Totali> definitely not as funny anymore
 <Aroduc> …

Impressions:

I think we can already close the polling and declare this as the best OP of the year. Dancing soldiers, fire shooting from feet (unless he’s being propelled by flatulence), terrible random Engrish; Basara’s got all of it. Whoo whoo! Whoever on the Basara writing team that thought up feudal soldiers doing the shimmy shake deserves a promotion.

This show was surprisingly entertaining, although I have to admit that I’m not sure how much of that is intentional. Masamune shouts out random Engrish as if he escaped from a J-Rock concert, and Sensei/Ninomiya have their preincarnations here. My sides were hurting as the first "YUKIMURA!" "OYAKATA-SAMA!" "YUKIMURA!" "OYAKATA-SAMA!" etc exchange, and then they did it again. The amusement factor is also helped along greatly by the soundtrack, which I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if it was completely ripped straight from the game. It’s all rock and guitar and overly dramatic wailing solos. On the other hand, while Yukimura and Masamune fight (complete with pose-off before hand… Press Triangle to Duel!), they catch fire, fly into the air, and then explode, shaking the ground for miles. The other people just nod sagely and go "That’s our Yukimura." Then, when the smoke clears, Masamune is up to wielding six swords at once. Yukimura already started out dual-wielding spears,so he didn’t really have anywhere to go from there.

Production is rather high quality all around, although the CG was rather clumsy at times. Just foreground and background drift at the wrong speeds and the occasional obviously CG horse or soldier passing through the background. Overall though, it was very well done, especially for most of the episode being action and/or dramatic posing. Things did slow down quite a bit in the final third of the episode as they tried to shoehorn some plot or something into the silliness, but that barely detracted from the episode. I’m not certain what I really think of this one yet, but it was rather entertaining, even if it wasn’t quite for all the right reasons. If they’re willing to do the whole thing in this over-the-top manner and the production, I may just stick around yet. If you’re looking for something serious, give this a wide berth, otherwise though, I think it’s well worth checking out at least the first episode for a few quick laughs.

BASARA OP

No preview.

PS, I need to go make and eat dinner before… dealing with… Queen’s Blade. I see the raw though.

10 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • Jarmel says:

    Looks kinda cool actually.

  • Totali says:

Almost as cool as TM Revolution trying to be rock, amirite.

  • shio says:

Haha, historical Japan mixed with over-the-top action. Just what you’d expect from a Koei property, right?

The scene between Date and Katakura with the bright cherry blossoms falling was my favorite by far. I’m not sure what battles they’ll cover but hopefully Hitodoribashi is coming up.^^

  • Aroduc says:

    Psst. Capcom.

  • shio says:

I’m not sure what to expect then. Dr. Wily?

  • digitalboy says:

    Hello Dio, where’s Casshern! ^_^

  • Shiro, Long Tail's says:

This looks unintentionally hilarious. I’ll have to check it out sometime.

  • The Phantom says:

“Cheeto anime” is a perfect title for this absolutely nonsensical series, from the dude that uses six sword with two hands and tries WAY too hard to act cool, up to the posing old man with a big axe that creates tornados with one swing everything in this anime looks like a bad bad joke. I guess some ppl may find it unintentionally funny but I can’t even stand the opening.
