Utawarerumono OVA #01 — Gratuitous

June 24th, 2009

I almost went with "Gratuitits."

Impressions:

Well, this was extremely disappointing. Taking the production away from Oriental Lights and Magic did not turn out for the best here. If all you want to see is the girls from the show sitting around in a bath topless for a little while along with some art ranging from decent to outright embarrassing, then I guess you’ll be pleased, but honestly… what the hell is up with the OVAs these days? At least the animation was decent enough, but not particularly impressive for an OVA. I’m not sure where the money or time went though, as there wasn’t really anything impressive at all. No, not even the FOREHEAD BEAM (no, it’s not really a forehead beam, just a poorly well timed cap) managed to pique my interest. It also really doesn’t help when everybody’s faces kept looking deformed or even disappearing and Urutori’s empty berserk eyes just looked downright awful.

Not even the story was interesting. Just expanding on Karura and Urutori’s friendship and all the girls spazzing out over a baby until Urutori’s den mother from hell instinct takes over and Karura has to talk her down by running around and dodging spells. It’s rather cliche and mostly just an excuse to show off Urutori’s nipples through 75% of the episode. Hakuoro, Eruruu, and Oboro barely made cameo appearances. I guess Eruruu’s breasts weren’t big enough for any cheesecake shots.

If watching Urutori breastfeed a baby or seeing Kamyu’s nipples is that important to you, then full speed ahead. If not, I’d really suggest skipping this and pretending like Oriental Lights and Magic’s version is the only one thus far. Maybe the next one will be better, but I really never thought that I’d be longing for OVAs as ‘good’ as Murder Princess was.

That breast is almost bigger than the baby. Forehead beamu looks pretty awesome.

  • jeffng9 says:

wait… whose baby is that? o.O

i’m happy to see utawareumono ova, but i sure do wish they were after the tv story rather then mid stories.

At least the OP was okay.

The bonus episodes were hilarious. Shame that it seems they didn’t want to make the OVA just light and funny.

  • jeffng9 says:

You must be fucking kidding me.

The OVAs are simply covering what was left out of the original TV series that was in the game. The bonus episodes covered a few of the shorter ones.

    >>art ranging from decent to outright embarrassing

If you have ever seen the Utawarerumono Game OP on YouTube or something, this level of animation is expected, AquaPlus is an eroge maker, not animation company. Not sure why they wanted to animate the OVAs themselves though.

  • animelovers says:

well well. isn’t it like the game series? when i first see uta ova i though it is continue from the first one but i am quiet dispoint. the art is lower then the first too.

  • Soljashy says:

They didn’t do the animation “themselves”, the art was done by a company called Chaos Project (though yes, this is the same staff that did the PS2 opening).

I personally find these character designs prettier than those of OLM (especially Kamyu and Uruto – though I don’t much care for the latter).
