Princess Lover! #05 — Wasted Time

August 2nd, 2009

You’re decimating that good first impression here, GoHands.

Impressions:

Ugh.

Nothing happens.

Nothing happens.

Nothing happens.

Nothing happens.

Teppei gets an idea for his party and Charlotte makes him promise not to forget her. FORESHADOWING! Ha ha! Fore.

There, I just saved you 22 tedious minutes of this show. Yeah, yeah, Sylvia also has dead parent issues, and she’s conflicted over how she feels about Teppei right now, but isn’t doing anything about it except calling the alley cat taking him out on a date and telling her that she’ll leave him to her. The angst dial rates somewhere below a drunk dial on the list of things I care about. Teppei also lost the few manly points he had left from the first episode and is now running into a deficit from wrapping himself in a curtain and cowering.

Preview:

Yes. This is what they used for the next episode preview. 30 seconds of looking at the crotches of men in loincloths.

I guess I’ll step up to the plate. I pretty much expected Teppei to hold off a bit. It’s just to early for the protagonist to commit. I was impressed with Charlotte. She obviously wants to move things forward but has some amount of concern for Sylvia. It was a nice balance between her normal overly bubbly personality and some empathy for both Teppei and Sylvia.

Not sure were we are headed in the next episode but the show is dedicating a girl for each arc. I guess Sylvia will finally make her move. I’d bet the final arc will conclude with the original plot involving the death of Teppei’s parents. This will permit Teppei to avoid choosing any of our heroines.

    return of the negligee

I find it truly, truly fascinating how you chose to continue blogging this, but decided to drop Bakemonogatari because you found Shaft’s use of stills and repetitive close-ups annoying.

But then again, everybody and their grandmother is covering Bakemonogatari #5 and praising it like crazy for story direction, and how everything made sense in the end.

That’s irrelevant to you now though, and you didn’t seem to like either Araragi or Hitagi for some unknown reason despite both of them containing more depth and personality (that was shown in episode 5) than most other characters in recent years. Also, despite ep 5 being good story, music, voice acting direction wise, you probably would have hated the animation sequences considering how repetitive it was with the eye close-ups, use of distanced shot shadows, revolving cg, and pan-shots of random scenery in general. Still, you should watch ep 5 for some closure on the story, it really is that satisfying.

tl;dr: Should have stuck with Bakemonogatari

    • Aroduc says:

You mean everybody who was already praising it for being genius anyway, right? ^^

      • Rawr says:

Mostly, yeah, but even those were bashing the show the last few eps since the Mayoi arc started ended up liking the finale of the arc apparently. The lolicons would have liked it either way, but as an anime fan, I’m pretty sure that ep is going to be remembered by all as superb.

Music direction, script writing, and voice acting were all solid, but animation was rather weak all around, seemingly cutting corners at every point asides from key moments. Still, I’m not even going to whine about animation, considering how well it compliments the show’s nature which is heavy in dialogue.

Also, Chiwa Saito, Kamiya Hiroshi, and Emiri Katou are freaking fabulous. Been a while since I’ve been left awe-inspired by voice acting alone (probably had to do with the animation being subpar, repetitive, and cheap in nature though).

      • Aroduc says:

Well, at least someone’s being straight about the animation. It’s hard to swallow claims of excellence about one thing when the blinders are clearly on so tight about something else.

It’s somewhat irrelevant anyway since it’s moving to a Saturday broadcast in a couple weeks, and I’d rather pick up Canaan again instead of that… and SZS and Bakemonogatari in one day is the recipe for an aneurysm.

    • Artowis says:

I don’t get this opinion at all. Why is it so bad to ‘whine’ about animation in a VISUAL MEDIUM? If the animation sucks, that takes away from everything else because it takes you out / distracts from what the so-called story* is trying to get across.

You might as well just read a book then, most likely would have a better story.

*Seriously, what story? I see a lot of character interaction, which is fine, but don’t tell me there’s some grand story arc here. They certainly haven’t DONE anything to reinforce that idea. They’ve made the show into 1v1 interaction.

  • jeffng9 says:

hm… looks good but whats with the preview… at least show us some bikini rather than men in loincloths

  • Tensho says:

This ep such because nothing happen. I’ll give you that.

  • J says:

The only thing that attracts people to watch that show is Hitagi.

    • Irie says:

To be fair, the writing is pretty good. The ending to the current arc was predictable yet executed very well. Animation is stunning but after a while you feel like it’s an eye exam. I personally focus on the exposition and ignore the constant image transitions. They really should tone it down and just focus on the unique stories.

  • Tia says:

I got to admit after reading the comments Bakemonogatari really stepped up its game in episode 5. The confession scene was absolutely sincere and quiet bold. She was basically like, listen you were the only one nice to me when no one else was and I enjoy talking to you, so lets go out XD The funny thing is that the commenter that was dissing the series like crazy in the other blogs is still watching it XD I guess its doing something right.

  • Chimasternmay says:

aaaa, this is Princess lover ep 5, not Bakemonogatari ep 5 blog here lol

  • Albedo says:

We all want to see more Bakemonogatari episode reviews but oh well…

as far as THIS show went I rather enjoyed the lack of any significant plot development… NOT!
As long as that damn party happens next episode I will be happy but for gods sake I can only care so much.
The pace of this show reminds me of DBZ. Pretty soon they’ll have 20 minutes of Teppei and the maid staring at each other in the car before cutting to “NEXT TIME ON PRINCESS LOVER!!!”

  • Chimasternmay says:

    lol

  • moridin84 says:

You’re looking story progression in a harem show? Harem shows are about characters, this episode was about characters, what’s the problem?

  • Anonymous says:

I love this episode, the relationships between characters are taken a step further.
