On the other side its ok the way they did it because Virgilia can be a really human and caring character .... I think with never seeing the eyes some of those scenes might not come of so good. After all this whole ideas about open / closed / "dim" eyes revolves around the eye being the mirror to the soul. And its still easy to differentiate between half closed and e.g. staring wide open (think Maria reading the letter).
