Hidamari Sketch × ☆☆☆ #01 — “INTERNET!”

Battlecry of Hidamari.

Impressions:

And thus we enter yet another season of me having nothing to say about this show, and yet somehow struggling to write a paragraph or two each week. It is my own personal Sisyphean challenge. And look at that, there’s a paragraph already taken care of.

Actually, I do have a fair bit to say about this one. While this episode isn’t quite as well made as the first episode of x365, Shaft really polished the art-style up quite a bit this time around. The color palette is noticeable brighter, there’s less use of pastels, and all the character art in general feels a lot better defined and offset from the backgrounds. I want to say that their outlines are thicker, but I don’t think that’s it. They also abused the hell out of CG this time around, which was a tad creepy in places.

As for the rest, it’s the same as always. Yuuno struggles a bit with her classwork this time, and then accidentally tears her assignment in half once she gets a perfect on it. Then back to the apartments to fatten Hiro up while the second half was mostly cleaning up one of Hidamari’s rooms for new people to move in… and fattening Hiro up some more. They eat a lot this episode. The newbies don’t really show up until the last couple minutes though, so there’s not really much to say about them just yet. They didn’t even get an animated introduction scene, just a pan-over of photos while everybody did their own intros. Poor newbies.

Got class in about 30 minutes, and Hidden God’s already aired (but not out in the usual places yet), so it’ll have to wait a few hours until I get home.

Preview:

Cheers!

2 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

I think this is where I interject the mandatory ‘oh god yoshinoya is hot’ reference.

Still, it’s nice to see them spending some money on a show which CAN survive zany stupid references… and which won’t get completely fucked up if Shinbo decides to be ‘original’. Looking forward to more from Nazuna and Nori though… if only so we get a tsukkomi and someone who makes Yuuno feel better by being even more pathetic than her.

I hope some more subs to this series soon.
