The Tatami Galaxy #01 — Motormouth
April 22nd, 2010
Apparently that’s how we’re translating the title. Okay, works with me!
Impressions:
Good lord… it is exhausting just to listen to this show. Think back to Kyouran Kazoku Nikki and Kyouka’s endless shrieking at 5,000 words a minute, but replace Ayumi Fujimura’s shrill yelling with Shintaro Asanuma (and the rest of the cast) and you’ve got the auditory content of this episode. I sneezed during the episode, and I think they went through four changes of subject in the time it took me to wipe my nose. I wonder how much heroine they have the cast on to be able to keep up that pace for twenty minutes.
The visuals are obviously one of the big draws to this one. The animation is predictably pretty awful, but the art is certainly stylish and unique enough to make up the difference. Unlike the other noitaminA offering, it does manage to stay at least visually interesting the entire time instead of using the alternative style as a crutch. The writing seems decent enough too, and I did chuckle a few times, but honestly, I’m sure I missed a lot in the torrent of dialogue.
Well, it is interesting visually, but I feel like I was trampled by a herd of guinea pigs at the moment. It’s a curious, but not particularly pleasant feeling. It certainly doesn’t inspire any particular distaste or hatred in me though, so I think that if you like alternative stuff, this is well worth at least a look. You just might need a little hummingbird blood in you to be able to follow it.
