Angel Beats! #06 — Character Assassination

May 7th, 2010

Alas, poor Tenshi, I miss you already.

Impressions:

Well this was one tiny step forward in one aspect and about eight steps backwards. This episode was pretty much all drama from start to finish, and very little of it handled well. First off, the art and animation this week was horrible for this show. Deformed heads, poorly drawn eyes, literally minutes worth of stills as they sat around dumping melodrama out of nowhere. Seriously. We’re halfway through the show now, and you want to take 5 minutes out to show a barely animated melodramatic waste of time about how sad a character is that he couldn’t make pots. Said character has had under sixty seconds of screen time before this episode, and only marginally more than that prior to learning that he wants to be God… and a potter. And apparently he can mindrape you. How? Who knows. Luckily, the power of homosexual hugging cures all ills.

I also despise the direction they decided to go with Tachibana’s character here. She went from mysterious superpowered cypher to just another airheaded ditz made to directly pander to the same crowd drooling over the legion of other airheaded ditzes already in this show. The violence also didn’t really have much of an edge either. After watching them get beaten, crushed, drowned, and cut in half for jokes, it’s hard to take seeing a couple beaten up bodies as particularly shaken. The one thing that I think this episode did do right, however, was the revisiting of Yuri’s dark past. I really liked the imagery of the coffins flashing between her siblings, particularly because it wasn’t immediately obvious what they were. A soft touch like that would do absolute wonders for the rest of the overblown horrible drama that this show loves to spew out. Plus, TK had I think four or five lines! One of which was a Terminator quote! That’s a plus if ever there was one.

The cliffhanger at the end was also exceedingly stupid. The flashback just cuts off in mid

    D:

    Blog cliffhanger!

    *implodes*

  • Kaisos says:

Aroduc, why do you even watch anime if you hate it so much?

    • Anonymous says:

He does it just to mess with you.

    • Aroduc says:

Because my enthusiasm level when I sit down to watch an episode is about at a 3/10. Most other bloggers are about 11/10. It amazes me how some people can be blown away and rant about how its THE GREATEST THING EVER NEW MASTERPIECE IN ITS TIME ETC ETC week after week after week, often before they’ve even watched the episode. Hell, today, someone on IRC was talking about how Angel Beats was so sad and made them cry, then it came out that they had watched it without any sound for the entire episode because the audio on the stream cut out. That boggles my mind.
Then again, that’s probably why most people burn out quickly after investing themselves so heavily in bloody everything. I’m happy if a show’s great once every four episodes and watchable for the rest of the time.

I haven’t watched ep 6 yet (looking for a source w/ decent subs), but all the others have made me laugh. ROFL @ rocket-powered desk chairs! LoL! Reading about other people’s reactions shouldn’t get you all worked up. Maybe choose not to read them? (At least add some dark humor or sarcasm or something.) Otherwise, very nice synopsis.

      • Nanaya says:

Aroduc is a very good balancing mechanism for my overly-high levels of optimism in series. Funny how you tend to completely overlook the flaws in these when you watch them via immersion.

And this series needs more Tenshi being a likeable character. Waiting for subs, so I hope she stays that way in this episode.

      • Gin says:

In other words, he is cynical.

      • Anonymous says:

i prefer your style of analyzing anime. it completely lowers my expectations since I read these before I watch the series. that way, when I actually watch it, my expectations are so low that I actually enjoy the episode.

hearing about how people love every aspect of a show, only makes me more disappointed when I watch it myself

        so… yay aroduc!

    • Masaki says:

      He hates everything.

If there’s anything I’ve learned from this blog, the author is critical of everything. I don’t think I’ve actually seen him praise anything before.

Nevertheless, I find his rants interesting.

  • Anise Punter says:

    Needs less Yui-nyan.

    Ouch, you can’t be serious!

  • Anon999 says:

Tenshi is the only person I actually like in Angel Beats. The rest of the cast, save for the protagonist, are either idiots, oddballs, or assholes.

I wish there were more people like her instead of these tsundere bitches.

  • Pozzy says:

    best line of the show~~

    I’ll be back.

    I love you TK.

the rest of the show… seriously a potter? …………………

  • Kaisos says:

So I actually watched the episode.

Well, it wasn’t TERRIBLE, but…. man is this show rushed, or what?

I could have taken Otonashi’s freaking out and random hugging, Naoi’s ‘tragic’ past, and the SSS being spawncamped so much more seriously if there had been actual BUILDUP for any of them, but…

I know it’s been said before, but this would make an EXCELLENT visual novel. Too bad, huh?

    • Arabesque says:

”I know it’s been said before, but this would make an EXCELLENT visual novel. Too bad, huh?”

You interested in going through the Naoi route?

      • Kaisos says:

Since he’s probably a reverse trap, sure. Always did want to fuck Shinji Ikari.

        He can’t run away!

      • Nanaya says:

I would normally be horrified and disgusted, but for some reason I’m laughing too hard for that.

      • Albedo says:

Really? Shinji? the constant whining and angst wouldn’t bother you? I’d have to kill the kid after being around his emo self for any extended period of time.

  • Arabesque says:

So, did he pick up the hypnotism trick from his father while they were making ceramics together or did he learn it from an extracurricular activity?

  • Aex says:

That dude just tried to mind-rape Yuri… as much as I dislike Yuri, mind-raping just ain’t right! But now that he’s felt the touch of another man(poor Otonashi, getting all the bad jobs), his evil side should be satisfied and we can get back to important stuff instead of a slaughter of a bunch of people who can’t die.

Pretty sure Otonashi just earned himself a few dozen points with Kanade and Yuri, and Hinata turning around the “Are you…?” running gag was awesome!

  • tylon says:

When tenshi is showing off her different version of “hand sonic”:

    Version 2: Wow… Looks interesting.
Version 3: Huh??? A trident? Is that really useful?
    Version 4: WTF…

“I make it into a flower form, but I find it too cute”
My reaction is: It’s not the weapon that is cute. It’s the maker.

    • Aex says:

“My reaction is: It’s not the weapon that is cute. It’s the maker”

My thoughts exactly. The spacey thing kinda works for Kanade. Was pretty adorable when the Mapo Tofu made her forget about class and get all impatient.

  • Nanaya says:

So… according to what that guy said, its a competition to choose who is God? Hmm…

    =================================================

—-The one who becomes God will have any wish come true.

    Angel Beats War.
A great ritual that materializes one as the greatest holy being, God.
There are two conditions to participate in this ritual.
To be a teenager with a traumatic angsty past, and to be chosen as a “Player” by the War.
(The experience in the life is not questioned if one has the aptitude)

There are many other chosen Players, and one class of NPC.

    There is only one God.
If you wish for a miracle.
Prove that you are the strongest with your powers.

    • tylon says:

      FSN?

For those that loses the qualification will be deported out of the world.
This is how cruel this world can be.

  • Yamibakeru says:

I don’t know which is worse at drama buildup: Angel beats of mayoi neko Overrun. Both episodes this week tried to inject some drama, both failed horribly.

  • FJC says:

I enjoy the series as it is, even though I agree that the pacing and poorly done drama was ridiculous; as many have said, “seriously? a potter?” But I think cynicism taken to such extreme levels just makes life dull.
