Arakawa Under the Bridge #08 — Mouth to Mouth

Say "ahh."
Impressions:
Eh. I’m not really sure how to feel about this episode. I do think that it was definitely better than most of the early ones, but almost all of the jokes were so predictible that the whole thing felt completely phoned in. Every character immediately fell back into their usual stereotype within 15 seconds of trying to play it straight and the "If you’re lovers, then kiss" thing (along with Kou’s 5 minute overreaction to it) was as cliche as it comes. The art was pretty dodgy this week too, not that this show has ever exactly been the Rembrandt of anime, but this episode definitely had more than its fair share of faces needing quite a bit of touch up and recentering.
At least the overly obsessed Man Friday was somewhat amusing, the ‘dental checkup’ being the clear highlight. That was terrifying, although I wasn’t aware that Star-For-Brains was so homophobic. Then again, it didn’t really look like they were kissing so much as devour each other’s faces at the same time. It does undermine Kou’s whole "I come from the real world" schtick when he reveals that he had a crazed, slightly extremely gay old man inspect his teeth and lovingly clean his face after breakfast though. If this is normality, then a man dressed in a habit hiding on top of your garderobe with a sniper rifle isn’t really shouldn’t be that unusual.
