Shiki #03 — Fruitier Than Carmen Miranda’s Hat

Where do these characters keep coming from?

Impressions:

My patience for this show is running thin, but at least this episode was so bizarre that it was fun just to have all the different ways to mock it floating around in my head. I’ll start with the most boring part. The budget’s already running thin and it’s plainly evident. No, unfocusing the camera and shaking it wildly does not hide the fact that you just had a 30 second still of a piece of paper. Stop that. Stop it now.

On to the more amusing things. I can’t take these vampires seriously when they all look like their heads have been viciously savaged by a parrot. Hell, the parrot may be dead and still caught up in there. The boy with the cat ears has the least weird hairdo of them all. I would also like to know why nobody is questioning their lack of eyes. They really need to do a better job with presentation in general. Leaving off on the cliffhanger of catboy having glowing eyes doesn’t quite have the same menace after showing that his entire family is certifiable… and his mother/sister have no eyes. Consistency, people. It can help.

Equally as amusing was the introduction of yet another new teenage character that the episode spent about half of its time on. You’ll never guess what’s up with him. Wait for it. He…… hates almost everybody. Wow! I never saw that one coming. The real twist is that he’s probably hosting the town’s local access Queer Eye for the Straight Guy show. Maybe there’s something in the town’s drinking water that just forces all male teens into unbridled hatred for all things living. Except that we also learned this week that Natsuno likes to blush and bring his bike over to be fixed by his guyfriend…… and then curl up in said friend’s bed to sleep. Suddenly his hatred of a beautiful girl doting on him is starting to make a little more sense.

I… what? It’s hard to take this show seriously when it’s packed with outlandish hairstyles like that.

  • Required Name Here says:

Yeah, the whole no-eye thing for the Kirishiki females is rather odd. It’s the same way in the manga as well, for no apparent reason. Who knows. Maybe they’re even more different?

  • Tokki says:

Yea,….umm the character designs just get weirder and weirder. Idk….its diff. =/

  • The Phantom says:

I’m still waiting for this show to start, Is the third episode already and duh! only a bunch of guys talking, no violence no blood no NOTHING, o yea and one of the main characters was a closeted gay, just what this show needed, another sicko. So far the only notable thing about this show are those lame hairstyles.

You initially called this one Gayer than paris, and then renamed it to Fruitier Than Carmen Miranda’s Hat?

Mmm hmm. I change things sometimes. Mostly because I move jokes from the title to the post.
