The Legend of the Legendary Heroes #02 — Mood Eveners

July 8th, 2010

Well, we’re getting somewhere at least.

FYI, Black Butler got a new OP this week that more or less completely removed the new characters, so… yeah, it’s back to the season 1 cast only. I flipped through the episode briefly, then gave up. *shrug*

Impressions:

This was about one step forward and one step backwards for the show. We rewound all the way back to Sion recruiting Ellis and Lyner for the Super Friends. That made the whole narrative and story much more cohesive, but they also sacrificed Ellis and Lyner’s intreractions for this episode, which made the whole thing feel even more generic than it already did. About the only thing that was missing from the party gathering cliches was a thief trying to pick Sion’s pocket and a mascot character.

The episode still did have its moments, like Lyner hightailing it the moment he was given the opportunity, or him dicking around with the other recruits without them realizing it, but much of the energy and humor from the first episode was just plain missing. Ellis is badly needed to offset Sion’s milquetoast approach to anything. Yes, he can be snarky at times, and even shoot lightning, but 95% of the time, he’s just standing around speaking in his dull monotone about this or that. At least Lyner’s girlfriend attempted rapist is spunky and kind of adorable. I don’t see good things in her future though. Besides, at this point, it’s nearly an ironclad law point that no Zexcs male lead will ever have any interest in a female.

Evil clowns! Evil clowns! Evil clowns!

    I feel you.

  • sage says:

I actually had to go and look at ZEXCS’ animu offerings to see if I could refute your statement, but sadly, I couldn’t.

    • Aroduc says:

Then you missed the show that ends with the protagonist sleeping with his cousin.

      • Nanaya says:

Hahah, I enjoyed that ending because wasn’t horribly standard/cliche. Kinda sad how by this point endings that you otherwise wouldn’t agree with become great just for the sake of having some freaking variety, because at least it’s SOMETHING more interesting than generic genre forumlas.

      • Ransom says:

Sorry, but what is that show? The one with the protagonist sleeping with his cousing? I kinda missed it too…

      • Aroduc says:

        Canvas2

      • Ransom says:

Oh! Yes! You are right, I had forgotten that the girl is actually his cousin… xD Still, I liked that ending. Mostly because that was my ship, but anyway :)

  • Aex says:

I feel the need to point out that “Evil Clowns” is redundant.

And hey, ZEXCS male leads have an interest in women… 99% of them just lack a sex drive.

  • Seinarukana says:

It’s nice to know they tone down the humor a bit. I can’t stand the fourth wall joke which was kinda overshadowing the plot last week.

  • ShuffleAir says:

Are you still going to do your one week summary of all the shows?

    • Aroduc says:

Yeah, I meant to do it on Wednesday morning, but lost track of time, and at this point, I’d rather just wait until the last two new shows air on Saturday.

—- there’s an official confirmation (from the creator) than the new duo are considered MAIN characters so we’ll be seeing more of them ^^

  • MisaoFan says:

The anime is directed by a same who produced Rental Magica and Chrome Shelled Regios.

    • Silver says:

Wow, that just made me want to watch it much much more considering I loved both Rental Magic and Chrome Shelled Regios.

  • Kaine says:

Sion is a bit creepy and it does seem like they’re setting up the redhead for some sort of tragic possibly cliche death.

  • Red says:

Would it be a cliche death if lyner kills her?
