A Certain Magical Index II #08 — Harem Upkeep

November 26th, 2010

Is there any reason these girls all feel the need to undress in public places?

Impressions:

An okay episode I guess, but it really didn’t work for me. The show continues to have its now signature problem of having no idea how to advance the plot short of just spewing it out from random orifaces. This time, it happened to be Tsuchimikado. Touma literally noticed him and Style talking, wandered over out of curiosity, and got sucked into about a four minute segment of Tsuchi’s talking head as they randomly toured the city while the plot for this short arc was summarized. The little encounter with Oriana at the end of the episode and Touma accidentally cancelling something when he shook her hand took about an eighth the time and was far more interesting.

Most of the rest of the episode was Touma doing harem maintenance along with a new addition to it. And by harem maintenance, I mean walking in on as many as possible while changing. At least he’s getting quicker at dodging Index’s bites. I don’t care too much for the newest member Seiri either. Maybe if she wasn’t animated like a jerky epileptic mule with two watermelons strapped to its chest every time she was on screen, she’d be less of a joke. It just feels like she was spawned just because somebody realized that the esper/Touma’s every day life side of things lacked a giant breasted character and poof, here’s your generic creature ready to be soaked, walked in on, and groped. Batteries not included.

Cat censorship seems popular this week and last eh (Cordellia and now Index..)

  • Mesousa says:

This is one of those “male lead takes screentime away from actual main character” episodes.

  • Chen says:

Nothing wrong with tatas and the groping thereof.

  • Solaris says:

    >An okay episode I guess
I take this as a great success!

  • Twi says:

They altered some of the finer details but still good overall.

  • Longhaul says:

tits, tits everywhere, and thats a good thing

j.c. staff is keeping fairly accurate to the books

    • Keith 'Azure Grimoire' Kurogane says:

      And its good thing!

    • Solaris says:

Yes, but i feel somehow sorry as they axed completely any technobabble for the sake of fanservice only.
I mean, it was ok to lighten the pace cutting speeches, but couldn’t they use the screentime they gained from it other than showing boobs and undressing girls?

      • Kaisos says:

        Why would they do that?

      • Longhaul says:

Huh? They didnt add in new fanservice scenes, and there is still talking head scenes.

      • Solaris says:

@Longhaul: I know they didn’t add new ones, but they’d better cut some instead, unless they want people think they’re overdoing with fanservice.
Look in the nuns arc as they had 3 fanservice scenes in one episode, and they made 2 in this, at the start of this new arc. It’s too much to stomach all in one go and people may think this arc too is another stupid fanservice show as the old ones, where it’s not really like it!

  • Solaris says:

@Kaios: They axed technobabble and left fanservice to make Index as light as Railgun was. That show was more popular than Index, after all. well IMHO, of course

    • Kaisos says:

I meant “why would they ever axe fanservice scenes?”

      • Solaris says:

oops sorry: They should cut them a bit for the sake of not let people think Index is the n-th harem fanservice crap show (it really isn’t).

  • Yue says:

Touma, you are one unfortunate lucky guy. Best episode pacing ever! A drop of plot and whole lot of fanservice. Darn you Touma!! ^_^
