Infinite Stratos #01 — MONORAIL

January 6th, 2011

Seriously, who uses a monorail?

Impressions:

Despite being ostensibly mecha and having a premise duller than dishwater, I actually really enjoyed most of the episode and I’m pinning almost all of that on Ichika, which is good because the camera never leaves him. He’s just so likeable. He doesn’t lament being stuffed into an all-girl’s school, or whine about… well… anything. Heck, when he sees his roomie in a towel, first he dodges the sword, then catches it, then when she goes for attempt #3, he grabs his own sword. Upon finding her bra on it, instead of freaking out, he takes the opportunity to make a snide comment instead. Would that all protagonists have his composure and quick wit. Of course, the slick CG action at the start did help get things started on the right foot too. I still don’t like CG, but at least this looks good. Well, the monorail didn’t, but have monorails ever looked good?

Not everything was roses though. While Ichika and Generic-Female-Childhood-Friend were both decent, most of the other side characters were pretty annoying and this episode really had absolutely no substance whatsoever. "A boy!" "Now we must Kung-Fu Mecha-fight because I am really really really British, and if there’s one thing the British can’t abide, it’s penises." And that’s the plot. What else is on the checklist here… It’s technically solid, but the CG intro was definitely the high point. The rest of the episode was really nothing special. Nothing notably good or bad about the music really.

In the end, I think that Ichika is either going to make or break the show for most people. It’s really built as more of a comedy than the usual mecha tropes anyway. A lot of it is quite generic in setup, but Ichika so far is a really well written and solid character that has a confidence that you don’t see too much of in the genre. I’m leery of what would happen if/when the focus moves on to other characters, but it definitely won enough of my favor for me to give it at least another episode or two, CG mecha notwithstanding.

Those damn Brits and their need to destroy male genitalia.

  • sage says:

    ALL HAIL BRITANNIA!

  • DmonHiro says:

Awesome main lead. I’ve been yearning for another one of those since I watched Seikon no Qwaser. That male lead also had a bath scene and he dodged everything then came in for a closer look. NO MORE WIMPS PLEASE!!!

  • Dual says:

    Ichika is awesome
    British girl is awesome
    CG battle looks great

    Good first episode was good

    • positiveputty says:

yea… i thought the next paragraph was gonna be JOKES ON YOU!

**woops meant to reply to Anon below.

either way… more harem hijinks doesnt sound particularly appealing. i was hoping that would be an ASIDE to the MECHA and ACTION labels for the show. oh well…..

  • Anonymous says:

when i read the first paragraph, i thought you were being sarcastic again

  • The Dude says:

Superpowered harem leads who aren’t doormats are so rare that I’ll take anything I can get. Bonus points if Ichika is able to use his powers for awesome instead of moping around and doing nothing.

  • AfroSquirrel says:

    Good lead + Mecha-parody + BRITAIN?

Sounds like at least one series to watch this season.

  • Celestial says:

    Lockon Stratos.

  • Ninja Penguin says:

    God save the Queen!

  • Azuka says:

    I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Hyakka Something Samurai Girls had a male lead with a similar reaction in the first episode. By the third episode he had become a complete wimp.

Hope this doesn’t go down that route.

    • Zilla says:

They’re already starting to characterize him as an idiot from his time in the classroom, and he begged his roommate to let him back in so that he could escape a few girls.

So, there’s a pretty good chance of that. Although he does seem to be pretty confident.

  • Yue says:

In a technologically~advanced militarized world where women dominates the social hierarchy, WE NEED A MAN…

Not just any MAN, but a MAN who’s not a wimp and whiny. A MAN who resist the advances of a harem (guy, girl, or otherwise) and goes by the revolutionary thinking that HE will transcend the need for raging teen drama and wanton fanservice…

A MAN who will COUNTER~DOMINATE all forms of battlefields. Raise our flag, YOU, brand new MALE PROTAGONIST!! XD

  • Nazarielle says:

Wow I thought for sure you’d hate all the harem stuff. Though you do make a good point, Ichika is miles ahead of most male protagonists. I thought for sure he was going to make a fuss about his room and such for the rest of the episode.

    • Nanaya says:

I can almost guarantee that most of the dislike of harem series is based on the protagonist’s personality and how they deal with the harem.

  • The Phantom says:

Lol the only male that can pilot the I.S. what a contrived setting. Still it was a good episode but I’m pretty sure that the male lead will degenerate to the usual dimwit soon enough.

  • Greg says:

My first depression of this, looks dangerous to fly around like that without any decent protection for your head.

Beyond that I was a little bit positively surprised, but like mentioned above Hyakka’s male lead turned into the usual harem male lead fare after awhile. Let’s hope for the best, that had at least 1/4 left of his spine at the end.

  • alex says:

They talked too much. His sister is annoying and that guy reminds me on Kyosuke (OreImo). He is just a standard harem lead. And is his childhood friend retarded or what ?
I felt like Sky Girls were better and I had more fun watching Rio.

  • matt says:

I liked first episde, definitely better than Merry and Madoka, good fights and solid writing but generic setup (it wroks anyway).

Too bad is getting bashed in Japan for the unoriginal setting (of all places, Japan complaining about generic settings in anime), I want this to do well.

  • Anise_Punter says:

It was an okay episode that was damaged by too much of the Mio-Akiyama-voiced one. She had about 15 minutes too much screen time, especially when apparently they’ve got Yukana on standby.

    • Westlo says:

Yukana on standby? Yukana talked for like 5 mins straight in the episode and than had another lenghty segment @ the end and should be all over next episode.

  • roberto says:

ALL HAIL LELOUCH VI BRITANNIA ‘UHUSHAushaUSuhaushUSHusS

    nice anime :)

  • Sally says:

Do you guys want him to be like Makoto from School days? A guy who sleeps with the girls almost every episode who uses their feelings for him to his advantage. Sorry but after watching the travesty that was School Days, I have a new respect for the harem male protaginest.
