Dororon Enma-kun Meeramera #01 — The Wrath of Renkonman

April 7th, 2011

Bellbottoms shouldn’t look that good.

Impressions:

This show is like someone opened up a time portal to the 80s and brought a truckload of sugar with them. It even has a kid named Renkonman wearing bellbottoms. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want to screw with somebody named Renkonman. Of course, with that comes all the oldschool humor as well, for either better or worse. It’s certainly different from the current norm, but that’s not necessarily better. The vast majority of the jokes fizzled and some the humor was… nightmare inducing. *shudder* The scoring was also, in a word, baffling. The music rarely fit the scenes and it was almost like an old Super Robot show with how half the characters would have weird little 30 second themes that played over them doing almost anything.

One thing the show didn’t lack was energy, both visually and in its actual content. It’s extremely well animated, and while the art style is definitely a throwback, they did a good job there as well. I do wish the fight scene had been a little more interesting. They clearly put some effort into it, but after growing its giant penis spear and thrusting it around, the ‘fight’ iteslf was just basically Enma hitting a pole back and forth. Very very Freudian, but pretty weak choreography. That energy can often be overwhelming too, which is not a good thing. Like OreTsuba, the show feels like it’s taking the shotgun approach and hoping that if it throws enough out all at once, something is going to stick.

I’m not sure where I fall on this yet honestly, which means I’ll likely give it another shot next week. I can’t say that it really grabbed me, but it kept the jokes coming fast enough and without drilling them into the ground to make the twenty minutes fly by. I just feel a little bit like disco stopped by and beat me up on the way.

Three shows left!

There sure are a lot of shows this season.

Three shows left? Aren’t there a boatload more shows still to air?

    Kill it with fire.
