Hidamari Sketch x365 #06 — This Episode Made Me Sleepy Too, Sae

August 7th, 2008

Be more interesting, damn you!

Impressions:

A very Sae/Hiro centered episode, though part 1 was pretty much exclusively Sae and part 2 Hiro. This would normally be a good thing, but it really felt like they phoned it in for this one. I don’t know… maybe I’m just getting a little tired of Sae since she’s probably the weakest character on the show, or maybe it was the 1:40 segment all shot from the same angle, which they used previously in the episode (and in previous episodes) and then bumped back to later. Good lord, that segment was terrible. Nothing says entertainment like watching Sae talk on the phone for almost two full minutes. Hiro’s part was a little better, but still pretty lifeless in comparison to previous episodes.

I don’t have a whole ton more to say than that. Sae does work, Hiro bakes cream puffs. Almost all of the entertainment came from Yuno, Miyako and Yoshinoya though, which meant that a large portion of the episode was just me sort of drifting off to never-never land as Hiro talks about chocolate diets while Sae just grunts to show that she’s part of the conversation. There were a ton of outside references this episode, many of which seemed a bit strange. Yuno has a Yoko pillow, Hiro had the Yakitate Japan thing going with her puffs, Sae cosplaying as Izumi in one of the interstitials, and I’m sure the books in the book store are probably something as well, though I didn’t really try to guess.

Preview:

Yes, get them all drunk. All is proceeding as planned.

    Ah, Hiro in a bath…

Y’know, they used to have less skin fanservice and more moe fanservice… or maybe I’m just remembering the wrong s how.

Now to look for that Yoko pillow hsot.

  • Aroduc says:

I think it just may be that they end every episode (well, every episodic segment) with the character for that segment taking a bath.

    I’m not really certain why.

Damn lazy bastards at SHAFT everytime.
They do hate to actually animate stuff, huh?

I swear, if they were to put their animators in charge of a new series, they’d make it with near 0 animation, all filmed from 1 camera angle the entire time, at least 25 metres away from the unmoving characters, so they could just skip doing facial expressions and details like that and go straight to playing with Adobe After Effects, as well as putting text messages in every 3 seconds…

Hiro in the bath was fun though.

  • Haesslich says:

They ended the first chapter of the manga in the bath, and I suspect SHAFT has made this a tradition due to that. However, it used to be always Yuno who ended things… which was normal, and cute – now it’s shifted to the melonpan contingent (Hiro and Miyako) in the last few episodes.

  • sage says:

If only all episodes ended this way…

  • Midonin says:

I like my Hidamari baths. The show wouldn’t be the same without them.

Speaking of which, Sae needs her bath scene.

  • Aroduc says:

You mean aside from the one she had this episode?

  • Midonin says:

Oh, right. Must’ve skimmed over there.

  • Anonymous says:

Why is there a Yoko figurine there?! I had Nia in mine !

    Oh wait..it changes constantly…
