Birdy the Mighty: DECODE #08 — Call the SPCA

When will the cruelty to dogs in anime be stopped?

Impressions:

I freely admit that inertia is the only thing that keeps me checking out the episode each week. Well, the opportunity for sarcastic bile before Pengy inevitably disappoints me by updating with another commercial or episode 10 again. I’ll probably finish this season, just because there are so few episodes left, but I can’t even dredge up anticipation for next week’s episode, let alone something coming months away. Another episode full of people whose names I’ve never learned having wacky school adventures checking out an abandoned resort in the mountains, and then what passes for a plot happens in the final three minutes of the episode. Twist of twists, Nakasugi is shown to have the Ryunka or whatever the hell it’s called in her and with it, the ability to turn large chunks of landscape, people, and dogs into dust. Dog leashes are immune to its power though. Whoever thought that disintegrating the dog, but showing its leash flying off was a good idea for dramatic effect should be drawn and quartered. What kind of doomsday weapon functions on dogs and houses, but not on nylon?

We’ve already seen that the power’s not particularly absolute at the moment, since cockatiel-girl blocked it (and dog leashes are immune to it), but I really have to question Birdy’s tracking skills. There’s a glowing green girl, the only light source for miles, leaving giant explosive dust craters all over the place, and you managed to lose track of her? Then, after thinking that it looked like Nakasugi, apparently you’re just chilling out around her the next day? Did you just decide that Senkawa’s half-asleep rambling of "why would that be Nakasugi" is correct and totally ignore what you saw for yourself? Did she get back to the house before you despite being miles away while you were following her? That would at least explain why you’re hanging out around someone that you suspect to be the bringer of the apocalypse and not looking distressed in the slightest.

Remember when Birdy fought things? I miss those times.

  • Totali says:

You’re just mad at the school trip plot.

  • Aroduc says:

It’s not even the school. It’s just those 5. Or 6? I don’t remember. Only 2 people whose names even matter at any rate.

  • Omisyth says:

What the hell was the point of the first 16 minutes of the episode?

  • Aroduc says:

To remind us that it’s summer and we should be outside instead of watching anime.
