Kyouran Kazoku Nikki #20 — Vitamin What?

August 24th, 2008

Second worst monster name ever.

Impressions:

There’s only one thing less terrifying than a monster named Vitamin C, and that’s The Lepus. This was a particularly bizarre KKN episode, and not even in the usual KKN fashion. This was almost like a Twilight Zone episode where we learn that the gremlin on the wing is actually the pilot, you’re the one causing the plane to crash, and the yeti was your friend’s father all along. Oh, and man is the real evil. Unless the real evil is a honey badger. Those things are freakin’ vicious. They’ll attack a snake to steal its food, let themselves be paralyzed by the venom, then get up and eat the snake when it wears off.

Anyway, as may or may not be evident, I’m either too drunk or not drunk enough to cope with a monster named Vitamin C, that when killed, turns into a rain of Vitamin C tablets. I have a vague sense of forboding that a world exists where that would make sense. Snow and Christmas next week though! Hooray! I’ll break out the eggnog.

Brief Summary:

Chika goes out with friends, and thanks to a hamster bite on her hand, has flashbacks the entire time of her older sister. As Senko, her sister used to cut her hair and play with her, making Senko resent her immensely. One night, she ran into the forest and found a cabin. Inside was a monster which pounced on her. It didn’t kill her though, so she started feeding it, and giving it tons of vitamin C tablets to make it strong. She even named it Vitamin C. Senko trained it to listen to her and attack her teddy bear at her command, though it resisted at first.

In the present, Chika’s having those flashbacks all through their little day on the town. She even senses Vitamin C once and chases after it, only to find Hijiri instead. Eventually, the flashbacks reach when she brought her sister to the cabin and called out Vitamin C to tear her sister apart. Senko was tired of being her plaything. Chika’s headache and finger bleeding keep getting worse, and it doesn’t help that Hijiri offers her a vitamin C drink. She gets a call… apparently they left Hijiri behind back at their meeting point, which means that this Hijiri is… and Chika gets taken down by the soldiers hunting Vitamin C with very very bad aim. It was a non-lethal round though, so she’s back up and ‘Hijiri’ transforms into Vitamin C while the soldiers deploy to contain him.

Turns out in the past, Vitamin C never killed Senko’s sister. He had transformed back into his uncursed form and was just a scared man who hid from them. In the present, Chika tells the soldiers that she’ll take care of this, and confronts Vitamin C. He attacks her, but she knocks him down in one bat swing. She then mercilessly beats him, screaming out that he was supposed to save her and take her away from all of her misery. Finally, he lies still with his blood splattered all over the ground. He turns into sparklies and vitamin C tablets rain all around them.

Later, at Hijiri’s house, Chika tells them all about it. She excuses herself to go to the bathroom and sees a bottle of vitamin C tablets. Hijiri’s father greets her. He’s Vitamin C’s human form. Ooooooookay.

More important than Christmas in August is… Where’s Raichou? I’m still waiting for something to happen with her around, but nothing happens at all. Instead we got a vitamin C monster and a faceless blonde woman, “wow, that’s cooool enough” *cough*

  • sage says:

    Trippy.

  • DmonHiro says:

What the hell just happened in this episode?

  • Myssa Rei says:

Extra novel material about Chika/Senko, and a rather messed-up one at that (messed up as in crazy, not adaptation-wise). If one wasn’t paying attention, one might have thought that Chika had snapped.

  • Midonin says:

    Teika the Lion-Reindeer.

There is something awesome about that.
