Kekkaishi #25

June 20th, 2007

Haven’t we learned yet that every single new person at this school is a demon of some kind?

Apologies that this is a day late or so. Somebody uploaded the caps when I was settling in to start working on it, and then wandered off. I’m told a particularly unruly Roman Civilization demanding the secrets of Liberalism is to blame.

Impressions:

A pretty decent episode, though it was mostly just setup for the Kokuboru to make their grand entrance next episode. Mao always pains me when she’s on screen though. I think it’s because she’s permanently cross-eyed. Tokine giving a beatdown to the poor relatively powerless guy was pretty funny as well.

Summary:

Yoshimori is chasing a skeletal snake creature. He manages to catch part of it, but it seperates, only for Gen to grab the part that came off. Tokine is watching them argue when a giant lizard thing jumps up behind her. She turns to face it, but Gen has already beheaded it. Tokine notices that his should is slightly scratched. Gen says that the monsters are all gone now and that they need to clean up now and jumps off. Tokine starts cleaning up, but Yoshi follows Gen and starts grilling him on Tokine. Gen asks Yoshi if he has feelings for her, but Yoshi is embarrassed and yells at him.

The next morning, Yoshi and Tokine are up to their usual before school antics. Tokine yells at him that he’s an annoyance and he takes it personally and goes into a stupor. He’s still in a stupor later when Gen comes up to the rooftop for their heterosexual naptime. Gen asks him more about girls he likes and Yoshi does his best to deflect the questions and redirect them at Gen.

After classes end, Tokine is getting ready to leave when they hear all the girls in her class squealing over some new male student. The guy, Kimia, starts walking over to Tokine, leaving poor Mao in the dust.

Meanwhile, Yoshi and his friend are nearly run over by more fangirls. Yuri and her friends are giving her more crap about being uninterested in guys aside from Yoshi, so they end up going to head over as well. Yoshi also gets the lowdown from his friend about the attractions of the new guy. They trot outside to check him out, and see him leaving the school with Tokine.

Yoshi gives chase, and Gen is also watching the two of them leave from an alley. Yoshi’s team loses track of them and his two friends leave. Yoshi spots Gen though and starts to follow him instead. Up on the roof, the two see Tokine and Kimia running through alleys hand in hand. Kimia then even picks up Tokine and starts leaping from rooftop to rooftop while Yoshi imagines them getting married.

Kimia and Tokine eventually stop in an abandoned building. He tells her that it’s time for them to start, and then he holds up a piece of glass. Then, a small ayakashi appears on his shoulders and the ayakashi and human speak in concert. Tokine asks him what interest he has with Karasumori and the kekkaishi. It’s a bit hard to make out exactly what it was saying (it’s pretty heavily distorted), but it sounded like it wanted to know about their fighting style and abilities for a group called the Kokuboru.

Tokine lets her bag drop and then walks forward to Kimia and leans forward to kiss him. She asks him again why he’s so interested in Karasumori and the Kekkaishi. She then whispers in his ear that he won’t get anything from her and smashes him in the head with a barrier. Kimia picks up a pipe and starts swinging it, but she easily dodges, kicks the pipe away, and then slams him in the head again. He gets up, and takes a barrier uppercut to the jaw.

He tries to make some excuses, but takes some more tough loving. Tokine grillss him for what he knows about the Kokuboru, but he’s pretty worthless other than what we already know, though he does know at least a little bit about the ayakashi who wear human skin, as well as letting her know that there are also humans that are tempted by the power of Karasumori. He takes advantage of her thinking about things and tosses a desk at her, but she simply bounces it back and knocks him out.

She then traps the ayakashi part of him and explodes it. The human part wakes up and can’t remember where he is or who she is, but suddenly remembers being viciously beaten by her so goes running off in fear. As she looks at him running, she sees Yoshi and Gen and figures out that they’ve been looking on.

After a brief tongue lashing, she tells them her own thoughts on what’s going on, and while Gen has a few things to contribute, Yoshi gets pissy and storms off. Later that night, Gen is filling in Masamori while the kekkaishi are filling in their grandparents, both of who are familiar with Kokuboru.
