Kekkaishi #26 – A Day Without Yoshimori

June 28th, 2007

Slayers taught me that you should never trust a fish monster with anything more valuable than a plastic spork, and that life lesson holds here too.

Impressions:

As far as Kekkaishi goes, this was not one of the better episodes, and definitely the worst since Gen came onto the scene. We get introduced to most of the Kokuboro, but they don’t actually do anything interesting. There was some development as Tokine starts to think more about her relationship with Yoshi, but that was pretty minimal. At least we got to see poor terrified Yuri. She’s such a cute little imp.

Next week is more Masamori stuff too. I really hate the guy, but he generally means that the plot is moving right along, so we’ll see how that goes.

Summary:

The episode opens at our lovely little villain castle where they’re having generic evil bad guy conference. They’re developing more human skin, but they need more time to perfect it, and unsurprisingly, the big horned grumpy guy is all for just charging in and saying fuck it all. Their princess is just sort of chilling in the next room.

Over at Karasumori, Yoshi and Madarao are chasing after a demon. Gen and Tokine jump out in front of them and immediately slay two before jumping off to keep killing the little grunts, leaving Yoshi in the dust. From being emasculated like this, he gets a delusion of grandeur and heads way up in the air to get a good look at the surroundings. They spot a demon and Yoshi leaps down to kill it, but forgets to leave himself something to land on and ends up in the pool, cold and sneezing.

The next day, Tokine is walking to school when she hears someone yelling. She turns and bitches the guy out, but it’s not Yoshi. The poor guy is sick at home in bed. Shige runs in yelling that he needs to go to school. Yoshi tries to use a barrier to cover his sneeze, and succeeds at braining himself on it.

Back at Generic Evil Lab #2, our generic evil scientist lady Aihi is working on the 9th type of the human skin while a fish monster (Sui) comes in all gung-ho to go after Karasumori with it. She agrees to let him try and unleashes the human skin on him. It looks the same as the observer from before… so… that research is really advancing quickly… eh? Our generic bandaged villain, Kaguro, comes in and tells them that Sui’s basically screwed if he goes to Karasumori. This only spurs him on and he rushes out despite Aihi’s objections.

BACK AT THE PAN-GALACTIC CORE, Gen is lonely on the roof without his heterosexual sleeping partner. Yuri is also lonely without Yoshimori around. The two meet in the hallway, and Gen asks where his man-buddy is. Yuri still thinks that he’s evil, so she tells him that Yoshi’s sleeping and can’t be bothered. Gen leaves and she collapses in fright.

Yuri thinks about how to track down Yoshi to tell him about Gen, and finds Tokine in the lunchroom, still thinking that she’s his sister. She drags Tokine off and tells her that “a transfer student” is full of evil. Tokine quickly figures out that it’s Gen and tells her that he’s working with them. She also corrects poor Yuri of her mistaken assumption that she and Yoshi are related. Yuri gives her an angry “jiiiiiiiii~” in response.

As Tokine and her friend are leaving school, Tokine imagines Yoshi waiting for her at the gate. Her friend asks if she likes him, which she denies, but her friend continues and says that they’re pretty cute together like a brother and sister.

MEANWHILE, ON THE DEATH STAR, our administrative head villain is getting informed about the idiot fishman wandering off, and like us, he doesn’t particularly care at all.

That night, Hakubi and Tokine are out patrolling. Hearing Hakubi try to say “unbelievable” in English is a terror unto itself. They sense something, and take off running while the fishman watches from above. Unfortunately, all they sensed was Shige, filling in for the still absent Yoshi.

Shige is full of energy and takes off immediately. He senses something strange, and Madarao smells something odd. Tokine is also tracking something, and all three arrive at Sui together. She immediately recognizes him as another critter in the fake skin. He busts out, having apparently used the fake human skin in order to walk up to fight them head on, and Shige goes into a big power-up which stalls out when his back gives out.

Sui starts spitting giant globs of acid at them. Tokine knocks Shige out of the way as they all start dodging. Gen leaps to attack and slashes him open, only for him to turn into water, reform behind him and attack. Gen dodges, tries again, but the same thing happens and this time Sui tosses him away.

Shige and Madarao are sitting in the bushes lamenting Shige’s somewhat uselessness and thinking about how to deal with it. Tokine surrounds Sui with a barrier and bursts it, but enough of the water splashed out of her barrier as she made it that he was able to reform. Gen and Tokine think about how to deal with him without Yoshi’s giant barriers. Tokine concentrates, and surrounds him again. This time, as the water splashes out, she surrounds every single piece of it in individual barriers as well and then explodes them all. Way to be useless, Shige and Gen.

One problem… she missed a bit of water, and he reforms behind her. He moves to attack, but a huge barrier catches him off guard and surrounds him before he can turn into water at all. Sickly Yoshi walks onto the scene, explodes Sui and then extends his hand to help Tokine up. Above them, a demon bat flies away. Yoshi gets an earful from Shige for showing up while sick, so Yoshi tries to sneeze on Shige. Roll credits.
