Baccano! #01 — Pulp Fiction

July 26th, 2007

What do you think they call a quarter pounder in Japan?

Impressions:

This was pretty impressive for a first episode, though very very overwhelming. I realize that it’s meant to be in the pulp fiction tradition, but I’m a bit worried that they might be trying to do a bit too much all at once. Hell, just look at the number of characters in the OP… plus more in the first episode that aren’t there… plus a few more in the ED that aren’t in the OP or the episode. The production values were all good, but very little amazing. Still, the look or the music is not a weakness of the show in the slightest, though I really hate hearing Norio Wakamoto’s voice. If people like Mamiko Noto and Kugimiya Rie are typecast, then they need to invent a new word for what Wakamoto is.

Still, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy this. That said… it would take a minor nuclear disaster to wedge me off of Mushi Uta after episode 4, and with me usually doing half duty on capping HiguKai, I don’t think I have the energy or will to blog this one as well, though we’ll see next week. Don’t count on it though. Then again… maybe just because there’s a character named Jacuzzi Splot…. tempting.

Also, apologies for the somewhat shitty screencap quality. The first raw that appeared was a 640 x 480 avi… encoded as a wmv. I’m pretty sure I killed the plants outside my window swearing at the stupidity of that.

Baccano! is looking pretty interesting at the moment, and it seems to be better than some other shows right not, so I suggest you at least keep watching. Oh, and Firo Prochianezo sounds a lot cooler, and more Italian-y.
