Potemayo #09 & 10 — Guchuko vs The Cuckoo
August 3rd, 2007
She continues her war against inanimate objects everywhere.
Impressions:
Lots of Guchuko makes me a happy person. She’s just so darling and precocious with her appetite for destruction and shyness around Kyo. I’m not a huge fan of Mikan’s brother though. He just seems to fill the role that Sunao normally would, the put upon and antagonistic character that the ‘lead’ (in this case, Potemayo) is attached to. Ah well.
Summary:
Sunao and Potemayo are sitting outside watching the sakura petals fall and generally taking it easy. A butterfly flits about and lads on Potemayo’s face. Then more and more land on her until she’s absolutely covered in them, so Sunao takes a picture of it.
Guchuko is also enjoying the weather, sitting with her pillow in the tree and dozing off. Kyo hears a noise from outside and sees Guchuko having fallen out of the tree. She’s still asleep, but her hairbands are going nuts. Kyo runs out to check on her, which wakes her up and she tries to run away, but is stuck. She keeps flipping out until Kyo picks her up, where she explodes in embarrassment. Her mother comes out and asks her what’s going on.
Later, Guchuko wakes up… on a pillow inside a house. She pulls out her scythe and backs into the pillow… then then slaps it away. She’s startled by a cuckoo alarm and slashes at it too, but misses the bird. She takes a stance and starts to wait.
The girls from class are on the bus gossiping about nothing particularly interesting. Back with Guchuko, she’s patiently waiting for the cuckoo alarm to go off again. The girls are still on the bus. Guchuko finally collapses, right before the alarm goes off. She leaps away in surprise, then tries to slash it and misses again. The girls have been dropped off at some desolate busstop. Guchuko is still trying to solve the cuckoo mystery when a door opens behind her. A pair of truffle chocolates slide through. Guchuko sniffs them, then opens the door and finds Kyo smiling at her… and faints in surprise. The girls are still lost somewhere and trying to find a bus home.
Guchuko is eating her chocolate happily while Kyo and her mother watch. Her hairbands suddenly get angered and shoot a laser through the door. She grabs some tape and fixes it up. Then the cuckoo goes off again and Guchuko runs off to fight it… bringing it back eventually on the end of her scythe.
Fed, Guchuko is sitting in the house nodding off. She falls to one side, and the hairbands prop her up with its tongue. Then the other side… and the same. The hairbands finally pull over a pillow for her to sleep on. Kyo and her mother start arguing about keeping Guchuko as a pet, though Kyo says that she’s a friend, not a pet. The hairbands get pissed and start hissing at them.
The girls are trying to hitchhike home on the back of a produce truck and are pulled over by the cops. Guchuko eventually wakes up and sees an open door and heads back to her tree perch despite Kyo’s mother’s objections. Guchuko looks up at the clouds and nods off… falling out of the tree again.
Short Omake #1:Guchuko is lurking around the yard. Her mother sees her and opens the door to let her in. She rushes in as the cuckoo goes off and then we see Guchuko tossing the cuckoo in triumph finally.
For part B, Sunao is getting ready to head to school with Potemayo. They meet up with Mikan on the way there and she tells him that she hopes that they’re in the same class again. Suddenly, a big guy grabs her and starts chewing her out. Mikan calls him Yasumi and says that he shouldn’t be treating his sister like that. She apologizes to Sunao for Yasumi. Kyo and Nene walk up and say that they can’t wait to tell Mikan the news about being in the same class.
In a flashback, Yasumi holds a grudge against Sunao for his pants. He stands up to reveal that his underwear is covered in grafitti from Mikan writing his name. Back in reality, he declares war on Sunao… but notices Potemayo. He tries to poke her, but she bites his finger.
Guchuko is trying to figure out how to make the cuckoo bird work… so puts a raw steak on top of it.
In class, everybody is talking about how being together again is the best… totally ignoring that their teacher was trying to give a lesson. Yasumi is also being fawned over by all the girls in his class. Potemayo is still attached to his finger…
The girls are posing for Mudo as he takes pictures of them. The other school girls start talking about saying “Cheese” in front of cameras and other things you could say. I’m having bad Lucky Star episode 1 flashbacks. Luckily, it ends after about 30 seconds.
Sunao is trying to sort of bond with Yasumi since Potemayo seems to like him.
The girls are still trying to think of other things to say instead of Cheese… like coffee… or ‘kimochi.’
Potemayo has moved from cuddling Yasumi’s chest to his face. So he pushes her to his head. Mikan comes up and Potemayo immediately starts hissing at her. Mikan asks what he’s doing.
The girls finally decide that “cheese” is good enough.
Mikan drags Yasumi away finally, leaving Potemayo with Sunao. She starts grabbing his head and twisting it around. After school, everybody is heading home. Mikan asks if Sunao wants to walk home with her, but Yasumi grabs her as he’s running past.
Guchuko is still trying to figure out the puzzle of the cuckoo. She sees a bird flying over head… and moves to the top of the tree… then throws it into the air. It falls to the ground and shatters… so she buries it and marks the grave.
The next day, Potemayo is screwing aound in front of a book, eventually sketching on it. Apparently it was Yasume’s. He gives her back to Sunao. Mikan yells at him for picking on them.
Another short omake about Kyo’s mother trying to lure Guchuko into the house with some strange kind of snack. Guchuko comes in and her mother closes the door behind her and says that she’s been caught. Fastforward… Kyo is chastising her mother for trying to catch Guchuko while the entire room is covered in taped up scythe marks.
