Kekkaishi #32 — Gotta Catch Em All!

August 14th, 2007

Atora has the least jiggle-to-movement ratio of any large breasted shounen female ever.

Impressions:

I’ll be honest, Pokemon Monster Trainer Atora’s design kind of scares me. Her eyes and mouth are entirely too huge compared to everybody else’s. This was also kind of a throwaway episode, as it really doesn’t advance the plot at all and just repeats Gen’s promotion from the last episode. With Gen all settled in and appreciating Yoshi and Tokine now, hopefully we can get back to the main plot and a Kaguro/Gen rematch. Next episode looks odd though… and involves that storekeeper getting attacked as well as another chesty scantily clad woman running around, along with what seemed like entirely too much of Shige. We’ll see I suppose.

Summary:

Gen is deep in thought when his doorbell rings. Yoshi is at the door with food from his father. Gen tells him to leave it and go away, but eventually relents and lets Yoshi in to eat. Once fed, Yoshi asks Gen why he hasn’t been coming to school lately. Gen makes up some excuse about lacking energy, so Yoshimori unveils his hidden weapon… his latest chocolate cake creation. It’s been awhile since he made a cake.

The two of them eat and the doorbell rings again. A voice calls in for Gen, and he starts freaking out and running in circles. Yoshi goes to answer the door but Gen stops him. The bell keeps ringing, but the voice eventually grows impatient and simply kicks the door down. The woman comes in and says hello to Yoshimori. While he’s wondering how she knows his name, Tokine walks in behind her. She’s similarly confused though, so the woman introduces herself to them as Hanashima Atora, Gen’s trainer.

She sees the leavings of their food and apologizes for interrupting their meal, but is then impressed when Yoshi says that he made the cake. As Yoshi tells her what’s going on, she becomes ecstatic that Gen is making friends and smothers him in her chest.

While the shikigami repair the door, Atora tells them that she’s here to adminster a test for Gen commiserate with his new ranking. He’s sulking in the corner, but a harsh word from her brings him running over. She explains to them that Gen will be taking the test, but asks them if they can support him and help him out. She tells them that it’ll happen at Karasumori school tonight.

That night, the Kekkaishi are thinking about what kind of test it’ll be. Gen walks up, totally downcast, and soon after Atora comes charging up on a giant bear, Raizo. Gen and the bear immediately glare at eachother and the bear begins pouncing on Gen and electrocuting him and otherwise tossing him around.

Gen eventually extracts himself and asks more about the test, but instead of answering, she calls Raizo and the two leap to the roof. Once there she turns back and says that the test will be a game of well… let’s just call it tag and that they’ll win if Gen can get her bandana (pretty sure it’s a scarf, but I’m not going to argue). He’ll have 30 minutes, and before they can do anything, she starts the timer. As she prepares to leave, she says that her little pets will be helping her out. Yoshi protests, but Raizo emits a cloud and then they disappear. Gen immediately gives chase. On the roof, Raizo is belching out more clouds, but Atora is gone.

Gen is chasing her through the forest. She turns back and tells Gen to “stop” and by the rules, he’s forced to immediately stop moving… and falls from the tree. Yoshi catches up with them in time to see Gen with his head in the dirt. Atora chastises them and asks if they’re really serious before disappearing again. Yoshi sees the clouds in the air and prepares to seal them, but Raizo calls down lightning from them, striking the two.

Tokine is making her way towards the duo. Hakubi sniffs the air and tries to warn her, but he’s too late. She suddenly trips thanks to a little mole demon grabbing her legs. Tokine’s less than amused by this, but heads onward to find Gen and Yoshi arguing. She clocks them with a barrier and calls them over to formulate a plan.

The three gather while Atora looks on. Tokine asks if Gen has any ideas on how to beat her, and he says that the biggest problem is Raizo with his clouds that can strike anywhere. Yoshi and Tokine say that they can take care of Raizo if Gen can do the rest. Gen says that won’t do, and that he’ll need some of Yoshi’s personal support as well.

Tokine suddenly attacks Raizo. She chases him off the roof. He tries to strike her with lightning, but she blocks it. She catches one of his feet, but he breaks free. Yoshi is right there though, and distracts him by drawing an attack, letting Gen kick him. Raizo is pissed off at this point and electrifies his whole body. Gen waits for him as he charges, but then Yoshi creates a barrier and bludgeons the hell out of Raizo, knocking him out.

Atora and another little winged cat demon thing sense that Raizo’s out of the picture now, but Gen’s only got 8 minutes left. The cat demon crawls onto her back and turns its wings giant and heads to the sky. Gen and the rest see it and think that they can’t really get up there to fight it well. Tokine thinks that Gen’s speed is good enough to be able to deal with it, but he’ll definitely need their help. Gen’s a bit worried though, he has something of a fear of heights around Atora due to her dropping him from trees during their training.

Yoshi says to believe in him and they get ready to attack. Yoshi is the first to go after Atora, but she’s able to dodge his barriers easily. Gen follows the barriers and keeps attacking. She’s able to dodge him as well though and stomps on his back. Tokine’s there to make a bouncy barrier to send him back into the fray. Yoshi continues making barriers for Gen to leap off of while also occasionally attacking Atora and Gen leaps around.

Atora is impressed by Gen’s speed, and tries to distract him by complimenting him, but he totally ignores her. Tokine is in on the barrier making too and is able to follow him much better. She’s suddenly distracted by the mole demon crawling up behind her and leaping on her face. Yoshi wonders what to do as time is running out. Gen starts doubling back along Tokine’s barriers to Yoshi.

Atora is confused for a second, but then Gen leaps near her with Yoshi in his arms. He throws Yoshi bodily at her. He makes a huge barrier around the two of them, preventing her from dodging and manages to grab her scarf as the time runs out. He forgets to make his barrier squishy though, so slams into it face first as her alarm rings.

Atora says that time’s up though. Yoshi screams out in anger. Back on the ground, Yoshi is apologizing to Gen and saying that it’s his fault. Atora comes up and tells them to not be so disappointed, Yoshi was part of Gen’s team and they passed. Yoshi’s ecstatic, and even Raizo is ready to play with Gen some more.

Atora thanks the Kekkaishi for helping Gen and being such good friends with him. She calls off Raizo and says good bye to Gen before whispering in his ear that his friends much be very important to him. Yoshi and Hakubi can’t resist getting one final jab in as we fade to black.
