Night Wizard #01 — Gothlolis, Goblins and Schoolgirls… Oh My!
October 2nd, 2007
Maybe it’d work better as a Day Wizard?
Impressions:
This was actually a really really enjoyable first episode. The art was really REALLY dodgy in parts (namely, the generic skeletons and monsters that Hiiragi fought), but other that, it was pretty quality. So much of it was tongue in cheek too that it kept me amused through the whole introduction to the premise. Hiiragi fighting the goblins especially was pretty quality, including him pulling out his lunch in the middle of it and saying screw it.
I also have to say that I really like the angle they went with Hiiragi. Far from being some random guy who discovered he has powers, he’s more put upon, with the gothloli kidnapping him from class with floating limos and helicopters and then dropping him from high orbit to fight monsters. Still a reluctant hero, but it’s nice to see someone experienced and ready to do battle instead of the usual “why do I have these powers and why am I fighting” nonsense.
All in all, Night Wizard was a hell of a lot more fun than I had expected. It did get a lot more serious during the second half, which focused more on Ellis (Eris?)… who is the reluctant hero who just discovered her magical powers, but the fights were decently done, the music was quality throughout, and aside from the ugly as sin monsters, everything looked good. At the moment, this is very much the forerunner for me to start covering on Tuesdays. Light hearted action and comedy? Yeah, I can get behind that.
No summaries for the first episodes. I write as I watch, and I don’t know if I’ll care about a show until after the first episode.
