Myself; Yourself #01 — Good, Now I Have Ear Cancer

October 2nd, 2007

I hope you know a good otologist.

Impressions:

I want you to try something for me. Find a couple of pencils and sharpen them to a point. Then, insert them into your ears. Still with me? Now pump them in and out until you can no longer hear anything anymore. There, I have now saved you the trouble of watching Myself; Yourself and you’ve had the same experience as me. Slice of life is really not my thing, and when you throw in a character who talks like Potemayo’s Nene on crack, it invokes a primal rage within my soul to go out and hunt down a kitten and beat it lifeless.

Aside from the immensely irritating Aoi (and that is a HUUUUUGE aside), there was very little to maintain my interest in what was going on. Kid left town as a kid, is coming back, has fond memories of a girl that played violin who slaps him his first day of class. There was pretty much zero humor in the episode and very few things to look at or pay attention to when I tried to shut my ears to block out Aoi’s piercing nasally whine. The most interesting and exciting part of the episode was the OP, which strangely featured all of them rocking out with guitars. If there was any such rocking out in the episode, it totally passed me by unawares.

In short, the only thing that kept me awake and paying attention (broadly speaking) was the blood rage that Aoi’s voice woke within me. I think I’m still seeing red even this long after I turned it off. I have no doubt that doofus will spend half the series trying to figure out how he wronged violin girl and then the next half wooing her back and then winning her over and I honestly could really not care less. Maybe if the show didn’t make me want to hurt other living beings, I could form a more cogent opinion of it, but you take the blinding intensive rage with all the rest that the show has to offer, which really doesn’t amount to too much substantial.

No summaries for the first episodes. I write as I watch, and I don’t know if I’ll care about a show until after the first episode.

I like the beginning when they were kids but after that things got boring.Like alway at the end they show the other main characters. There were also too many flash back.lol

  • Wererat42 says:

The premise even sounds generic. How many of these stories involve someone who has moved away coming back to their hometown?

The OP… probably some gimmick, trying to copy Haruhi or something.

  • Hinano says:

Well I’m glad I’m not the only one who wanted to strangle that seiyuu

  • Ravage says:

Hmm, the first decent OP of the season I’ve heard. :D
Doesn’t seem like my kind of show, though I will download the 1st ep when its subbed just do rip the OP music from I guess and I might as well watch the 1st ep then as well.

Someone here has been watching Zero Punctuation. ;)

But you’re indeed right: this show is garbage. Why do they keep making these?

  • Mew2 says:

I hate that girl with the squeeky voice. Makes me feel like cutting out chiyo-chan’s pic from my azumanga daio dvd case, laminate it, burn it till the plastic’s almost gone, relaminate it again, and keep repeating that… At least I’ll be able to do that many times before it’s well and truly busted.

However, I thought the rest of the cast were ok. Tamura Yukari, Koshimizu Ami, Nakahara Mai… Wonder if it’s gonna take the comedic-road or the drama-sob-fest road. Will probably give it a few more episodes, and if I still can’t stand chiyo chan, I’ll prolly still keep watching the series. Hopefully I’d have tortured my ears enough such that my normal day life wouldn’t seem too bad.

    Wererat42:
There are more of those out there with such a plot line (including guy leaves, comes back AND gets lotsa girls)?! I love theme! Could you list a few? Couldn’t quite find any others with all the above themes, and maybe 1 or 2 with somewhat similar themes. Would love to fill my holidays with a handful of these animes (guy comes back after long separation and faces girl problem… or infestation).

  • Wererat42 says:

Right off the top of my head Kanon and Wind -a breath of heart are two. Sometimes the roles are reversed and it’s the girl who comes back from a long absence, like in Gift, or Canvas 2.

  • […] freaking voice. I should really get that out of the way before talking about this show. Ok…pencils, ears, kills self, etc. With that said, this wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. The animation is pretty good, […]

I think… this one is the best anime I watched 13 episodes only but very nice story….

  • Aroduc says:

No, you didn’t. Because 13 episodes don’t exist at this point.
