Jyushin Enbu – Hero Tales #01 — You Must Gather Your Party

October 7th, 2007

Before venturing forth.

Impressions:

While excessively generic, the start of this episode was still pretty awesome. There were a couple times when I rolled my eyes… shots of furniture in the middle of the fight for example, but otherwise, it was a hell of a lot better animated and drawn than the promo material indicated it would be. It got a bit lamer and stupidly comedic in strange ways as it went along, but it’s still one of the better shonen shows that I’ve seen in awhile.

It wasn’t without a few faults. The art was occasionally a little dodgy, and… yeah… it absolutely reeks of fairly generic RPG/shonen adventure, but if it’s well animated and interesting enough, it’s hard to be too mad at it for that. Animation and choreography is mostly good, and really, what more can you ask for in your RPG shonen fighting stuff. Still, you’ve got it all… youth with a mysterious power… magical sword only he can use, annoying female sidekick that gets captured immediately… evil villain who burns down his hometown… the works.

Man, though… what’s with the clusterfuck of quality shows on Thursday and Sunday and almost no other day? Why can’t you adapt to my whims, Japan? *sigh* I’m not certain what I’m going to do for Sundays anymore, and this just blurs the line even further. Jyushin Enbu is definitely worth at least checking out and I’m sure it’ll gain a fast following among the Bleach/Naruto crowd, so hopefully tons of others will latch onto it, relieving me of any guilt over it not getting covered.

No summaries for the first episodes. I write as I watch, and I don’t know if I’ll care about a show until after the first episode.

This deviated MAJORLY from the manga. I can’t say all the deviations were a bad thing, since the manga was just light stereotypical shit, but they did cut out some essential points. I’m curious where they’ll take this so I’ll stick with it for now. Man, I’m going on overload this season though.

Hey, at least it has a girl in it.lol

  • Karwa says:

    D&D reference FTW!

I’ll watch this just because I’m a sucker for not-half-bad generic shounen

  • tanuki says:

I think one reason why it may feel a rpg like, could be that its manga is run by gangan powered, which is one of square enix’s shonen magazines

  • Aroduc says:

Square-Enix has no idea what goes into their magazines. Hell, Mahoraba was funded by Square-Enix. ^^
