Kekkaishi #39 — Hekian’s Big Day Out

October 24th, 2007

Stop talking and start killing things.

Impressions:

This episode was filled with so much technobabble that I’m sure my understanding is off in at least four or five places. Compound this with the fact that this just wasn’t a particularly interesting episode and it literally took me about an hour and a half to finish writing this up since I got distracted by everything and anything that I could find. It didn’t even tell us anything that we didn’t already know. Karasumori is ‘protected’ by some kind of massive barrier sealing up… something. We now know which corner of the school is sealed up. Hooray. Hekian doesn’t even make a particularly threatening villain either. At least Sakon seems to have control over the weather in addition to his black hole energy thing. Hopefully he’ll do something interesting in the future. Unfortunately, the preview for next week showed Tokine’s grandmother feuding with some punk Kekkaishi… probably one of their cousins or something. I’m not particularly hopefuly that it’ll be anything but filler though.

At school, Yoshi mopes while everybody else is surprised that he’s here and awake. One of them asks him if he knows anything about the transfer student that mysteriously left. Yoshi wordlessly leaves and goes up to the Roof of Heterosexual Napping and lays down while thinking about Gen.

At Kokuboro HQ, Sakon walks to a desk and sits down. He looks to the side and demands to know what Sion is doing here. She’s impressed and says that’s exactly what she expected from Gagin’s second in command. She reminisces a bit about Gagin while looking over his collection of weaponry in the room. Sion does warn him again to be careful, and he tells her to stop screwing around with him, he knows that she has her threads around his neck. She dispels them and warns him to be careful to not betray Byakku.

Speaking of Byakku, he’s meeting with Hekian about using Ayakashi to gather more information. Byakku grants him leave to do so.

At the lake that leads to Lord Uro’s realm, Sakon and Hekian prepare for a ritual. Hekian holds out his hand and eyes appear all over it, but nothing happens. Hekian says that it’s just as he expected. This god is protected very well. Hekian turns it over to Sakon and his troops.

Sakon gives the order, and the grunts pull on a rope, raising a giant worm and sending it into the lake to drain all the water away. The water lowers and Hekian says it’ll reveal the power of the area.

Tokine is distracted in class. The teacher asks her to read a portion, but Yukine says that she didn’t do the work, to the shock of everybody and an overexaggerated response from the teacher. Once it ends, her friend tries to ask if there’s anything wrong, but she says that she’s fine and thinks about Gen to herself. She says something about a pain in her heart aloud, but waves it off when her friend asks.

Yuri is likewise concerned about Yoshi. His friends come up to him with a theory about why the transfer student left, annoying him greatly. There’s another strange thing that happened, and they show him a report showing Uro’s lake completely drained. Yoshi grabs the camera in shock.

He and Tokine go to investigate the lake. Yoshi barrels his way through the shrubbery like an elephant.

They come to the drained lake and Yoshi yells down into the hole for Lord Uro. The insect thing appears underneath him, surprising him so much that he falls into the hole. The bug annoyingly explains that Uro was sleeping when people tried to bust in. They ask if it was Kokuboro, but the bug has no clue who Kokuboro even is. The bug is more annoyed than angry about all this.

Yoshi reports in to Shige, who is relieved that Uro is fine. They get into a fight, with Shige drawing on Yoshi’s face and wanting to write up some weird warning. It was a joke about Shige’s bad kanji that is beyond my ken though. Apologies.

Hekian reports in to Byakku about all the different ways that Sakon tried to break into Uro’s realm using massive tornados, but was ultimately unsuccessful. Hekian is a little concerned that Sakon’s attack may have done something to the ayakashi in the area.

Hekian didn’t get the answers that he needed though and wants to investigate Karasumori personally. He does know that Uro’s place is related to the power of Karasumori. Byakku gives him leave and Hekian says that he’ll leave Sakon behind for this one.

At Karasumori, the two Kekkaishi chase a shadow creature. Tokine accidently blurts out that this sort of demon would be nothing for Gen. Yoshi manages to catch it. They wonder if it’s something from Kokuboro, but it seems way too weak and small. The dogs suddenly sense a huge energy elsewhere and they all go running off.

They come across Hekian as the clouds move away from the moon. Yoshi tries to seal him, but Hekian teleports a few feet away. Yoshi tries to run in closer, but Hekian has pinned their shadows to the ground. Even the dogs are pinned in place. Hekian tells them to rest assured, he’s not here to hurt them today.

Hekian holds out his hand and does the eyes trick again. He sees a huge black barrier surrounding one corner of the school and falls backwards in pain and exhaustion. The Kekkaishi are stunned as well. Hekian looks at his hand in shock and wonders what the hell this darkness could be.

He walks up to Yoshi and tells him that he wants to learn more about their barrier techniques. Yoshi yells at him for being a companion to Kaguro. Clouds begin to pass in front of the moon, letting Yoshi move again and he forms a huge barrier, but Hekian appears on top of it instead of inside it.

Yoshi tries to catch him again as he talks about how interesting it is, but Hekian just vanishes. They look around, but the dogs say that they’ve lost his scent entirely.

Byakku sits with the Princess. He tells her that Hekian is doing research into Karasumori.

Byakku and the Princess talk about how they don’t understand Karasumori at all; why the Ayakashi become stronger, why it’s been protected so vigilently, why the Princess can’t get near it. He gives a reminder on the two families of the Kekkaishi that guard it, but says that even they don’t know what’s inside it. The Princess holds out graps for him, but he refuses.

He continues, saying that they’ll use the Kekkaishi to get to the bottom of this. The Princess wonders if this is the best plan, but Byakku says that all the mysteries start and end with the original Kekkaishi and they need to solve that mystery.

Byakku says something that annoys her and the Princess spites a grape that explodes the wall and then throws the rest of the grapes after it. He calms her down by saying that they’re the masters of barriers and understanding Karasumori’s barrier is tantamount to victory.

As he leaves, he gives some instructions to Sakon.

Yoshimori is back to his usual practice of sleeping in class. Tokine is also back to her teacher’s pet ways as well. That night, they reaffirm their vow to not give up in the fight against Kokuboro.
