Rental Magica #06 — Dirty Men

November 11th, 2007

Blood, sweat and tears.

Impressions:

First off, no OP this week. Second, this one is a continuation of the last episode, finishing off the Addie’s father mini-arc. Basically the Organization comes down on Addie and tells her that they know Goetia was the cause of it. Astral more or less takes over, though because of Addie’s involvement, she’s going along for the ride too, mostly as bait. There’s some arguing about the payment and whatnot while Honami and Itsuki flirt outside and then the rest of the episode is out in the field against demon mudman. Addie also sees Itsuki’s Gram Sight for the first time, and for the curious, that probably isn’t Engrish since ‘Gram’ was the name of the dragon slaying sword (THAT PART MIGHT BE IMPORTANT ^^) used by Sigurd to slay Fafnir in Norse mythology.

I probably just have a weakness for insert songs and badass heroes, so I loved the showdown between Itsuki and Addie’s father. It’s a damn shame that he’s not always like that. It wasn’t even all that well animated or interesting honestly, just good use of the music and good direction made it come together there. I got quite a few giggles out of how ridiculous Itsuki looked with his eye doubly sealed for most of the first half of the episode. Honami in casualwear is also something that needs to happen more often. Why on earth did she switch to her school uniform to go fight demons? Were the sweater and the denim skirt too restrictive? Can’t she just put on a sports bra and sweatpants? Is the schoolgirl skirt really compulsory for witchcraft? You’d think someone that spent their time up in the cold air where people could just look up and get a full view would be a bit more modest and intelligent with their clothing choices, but apparently Honami has no shame.

It also wouldn’t surprise me if a somewhat different animation team worked on this episode. There were quite a few shots that seemed different from the usual Rental Magica faire. They weren’t bad by any means, but just different angles or portrayals of characters, like this shot of Honami, definitely looked like it came from the fanservicey ED instead of part of the normal stuff. The Adilisia scene at the end where she moved in for the kiss and changed to nuzzle sleeping Itsuki was also pretty cute. She’s starting to win me over in spite of myself. I find the nuzzle to be far more affectionate and appropriate for anime anyway. Screw love triangles in action shows. The last thing I want to see between people fighting demons is blushing and/or tonsil hockey. More unabashed platonic nuzzling all around!

this show is a very good show, although it’s more supernatural than magical.

More Addy development and an Itsuki that kicked some ass would definitely save this show in my eyes.
