Shigofumi #01 — Fly Me to the Moon

Blast off!

Impressions:

First things first… if you’re interested in this show (and you should be) and going to watch the first episode, then you should probably stop reading now. A lot of the experience is defined by the final 20 seconds of the show, and it’s easy to ruin that by knowing about it ahead of time.

The musical score for this one is absolutely wonderful. In fact, the production values all around are pretty high. Fumika also uses ‘boku,’ which Totali calls hot, but just makes me laugh. The show is also dripping with style. Between the camera angles and the visual jumps, it almost felt more like a Shaft show at times. The writing is also very well done. It was easy to be drawn into rocketboy’s little adventure and his crush on Ayase, while they also foreshadowed Ayase’s true nature. The character faces seem a little oddly drawn, but I’m sure that I’ll get used to it.

If I have any complaints with the show so far, it’s with the really irritating staff. That thing shouts constantly and is just irritating in general. It’s also weird to see people vehemently arguing with an inanimate object. Still, it’s oozing with style and the writing is top notch. Even 5 seconds from it happening, I wouldn’t have predicted Ayase stabbing rocketboy. It definitely looks like this won’t be anywhere near Shinigami no Ballad in tone or delivery. The murder at the end kind of precludes that anyway.

Anyway, between Omni and Totali, I’m sure they’ll have this one more than covered. I’ll still be following along, but Kimikiss will almost certainly remain my first priority for Saturdays. We’ll see what they do though and maybe I’ll do quickie posts on it since it really was probably the best of the new crop thus far.

No OP this week.
