Shigofumi #08 — SHORYUKEN!!
February 23rd, 2008
Take THAT, Kirameki.
Impressions:
So, they lock Kirameki in a freaky kid’s closet after he gets shouryukenned, Fumika heals, and then we get to see Fumika’s tragic past. Crazy Mikawa raised her happily… until he felt the need to write on her. Being the crazy guy that he is, he got a little too into it and… well… there’s a reason you don’t use sharp pens on people. Especially when you press so hard that they break. She eventually split herself in two in order to distance herself from the pain. She is Mika, the one who suffers is Fumi. This leads to some really Gollum-esque moments (including the start). She ends up talking to herself in reflections.
Eventually, she would leave for school and discover other people. Fumi loved school. In the middle of the story, an explosion rocks the building… Kirameki has broken out and makes his way to his gun collection, but one is missing. The one that Fumika uses… and that Fumi took in the past. She locks herself in the room with Kirameki. He throws a dagger at her, and then draws a gun as she rushes him. The memories of Fumi being tortured come back. Eventually, Mika lost it and shot Kirameki rather than let Fumi die. Fumi still loved her father though, so had something of a mental breakdown and is now in the hospital.
Fumika sits on Kirameki’s chest holding the glass pen at his throat blaming him for everything that happened to Fumi. The others break down the door with annoying staff and stop Fumika. They defuse the situation and the younger ones head out while the elder sister stays to… reducate Fumika. They tell Fumika that they like her, so will keep waiting for her.
I honestly feel kind of cheated by the fact that Fumika was more or less fine and immediately regenerated the wound away. They really did a good job with the perspectives and the craziness of both Fumika and Kirameki on this episode. Especially the scene where Kirameki appeared in the spot light, and how he was singing while pouring the gunpowder out of bullets in a child’s room really drove home how screwed up the family is because of Kirameki. The fact that he draws on his daughter with a glass pen in a room full of weapons is certainly a start, but the sing and dance routine also helps. Fumi’s drawing of Kirameki becoming a terrible teeth gnashing monster was also really great imagery. I imagine that there’s more to Mika becoming the postal carrier than just what was shown here. Next episode has hot springs and lots of Chiaki though. Hot springs though? Come oooonnnnn… Not the obligatory hot springs episode… you’re better than this, Shigofumi.
Also of note, Totali is going to have a breakdown from all the boku when he sees this one.
