Shigofumi #09 — I’m Pretty Sure Chiaki’s Not Legal

March 1st, 2008

Pfft. This is anime. What do I know?

Impressions:

So, a Chiaki episode, though we really don’t get into her story until the halfway point. She wanted to go party hard in the tropics and drags Fumika et all with her. While eavesdropping on whose-her-face arguing with Kaname about confessing to Fumika, Chiaki asks Fumika who she likes (Fumi-chan of course). Fumika asks who Chiaki likes and… scene change. Eventually they stumble (literally) onto the other girl guest who has a scythe, amongst other things for grave cleaning. After random chatter about love confessions and some boozing, we hear her story about her grandfather and it ends up that she’s the granddaughter of Chiaki’s lover when she was alive. She died in a car crash before they could get married. Chiaki visits his grave and finds a message to her carved on the gravestone… he gave her his name in death. He never married anybody else and adopted a daughter eventually.

It was decently done, but felt a bit off to go from pillow fights, the male staff forced out of the girls’ room and the staves waterskiing to something more serious. It was relatively subtle, but I did like how Chiaki was in color for the flashbacks at the end while the rest of the memory was in black and white. That said, Chiaki looks like she was about 13, and dating a 40 year old. Also, I can’t help but find the fact that him trying to propose to her at least contributed to the accident that killed her somewhat funny. The ghost ring was a nice touch too. Overall a nice episode, but not one of the more compelling ones.

Preview:

Back to other people and a real death letter hopefully.

    Yeah I’d have to agree….the seemingly large age-gap between Chiaki and her “lover” in those flashbacks seems rather unnervingly large….. ^^;

    What! She’s totally legal……50 years over!

    Stave surfing FTW!
