Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei #12 — Otaku Na No Da!

March 22nd, 2008

I think any landing on Abiru is a soft landing.

Impressions:

The first part was about ‘hard landings’ (in English) vs ‘soft landings.’ They meant working up to drastic changes… for example… it’s relatively easy to immediately accept Kaere suddenly appearing in a bikini top even if it causes a small stampede, but put Abiru suddenly in a bikini bottom and hoo boy… Komori flashing Majiru was also declared to be a ‘soft landing’ for reasons I don’t even want to know. We’ve been shown her body. She’s curvy in all the right places… or am I just making the double entendre that much easier to work with? A very enjoyable part, full of everything that makes Zetsubou Sensei great, but not really notable otherwise.

Part 2 was done a little bit differently in presentation at the start. It tried to be about putting yourself in the place of the others with Itoshiki inserting himself into various dramatic scenes and watching the result. He even ended up falling off a cliffside with a pair of lovers. It really suffered because most of it was basically just Itoshiki self-narrating. The other girls showed up a few times, but Itoshiki’s attitudes and outlook really don’t match work well without someone else there to misunderstand or twist his words around. We eventually segued into an otaku centered part 3… though it was ostensibly about things happening for the wrong reasons… it’s just that every single example was otaku related. Kafuka even gave a long speech on Evangelion. I thought Zetsubou Sensei would self-destruct if it ever did something like that. They managed to hold things together without too many issues, but the whole ‘otaku’ joke thing has been done to death so many times over that I couldn’t really get to into it. Your mileage will probably vary.

Komori flashing… damn it, the camera’s pointed the wrong way. :P

It looks as random as ever, although I suspect this episode is one that it’d take someone as otaku-oriented as some of the characters in the Genshiken to explain… which means we’ll be waiting a while to see this translated.
