Let’s have some fun tsun!

Impressions:

Some gents of Spoonsubs and I (and Totali too) watched the first episode as it aired on a live stream straight from Japan. That’s the reason for the low quality of the caps. Apologies. I actually ended up taking about 250 since I just randomly tapped the cap button every screenchange or so. ^^; Usually MPlayer automatically does that crap for me. Also, it’s really REALLY hard to write about stuff when you can’t go back and watch parts of the episode again. I am so watching this again when the raw appears through the normal channels though.

I was a little wary of this one at first because of two things… A.) The cast is mostly very young girls in very short skirts. That could go horribly wrong horribly fast. B.) It airs on TSunday mornings in Japanland, which aren’t usually a haven for awesome shows.

However, this ran headlong into Aroduc’s Ironclad Law of Anime #38: "Any Show Where the Initial Villain Has a Crotch Laser Is Automatically Awesome."

Zettai Karen Children was an absolutely awesome delight. Well animated, well drawn, hilarious, dynamic, creative, the works. I can’t heap enough praise on this first episode. There was some perversion, but that was all done hilariously and not of the normal panty flash variety. A fair amount centered around super-tsundere Kaoru who reads fanservice magazines and rubs up against the smooth legs of women who have been turned to stone. Yeah, there were some snakes that tied the girls up, but there was no moaning, no squeezing of breasts and no ‘unhealthy’ shots.

Oh yeah, and the penis laser. Have I mentioned the penis laser yet? The villain for the episode turns stuff to stone by zapping people with laserbeams from his crotch. He pulls away out hapless hero and the girls’ new handler after he shows how "good of a man he is" and the two go off to the villain’s lovenest where one of them humps a giant golden statue of a burly man. The girls eventually beat him by pegging him in the nuts with a giant shogi piece, but not after there are crotch beams flying everywhere. In a lot of ways, this reminds me of the first episode of Inukami.

Anyway, music had a few moments when I cringed, but everything else about this episode was just plain awesome. The fights had actual movement (SHOCKING) and some level of choreography… I especially liked Aoi’s teleporting around. The humor was creative and often right on, one of the girls uses boku which is the second cutest feminine speech mannerism, and yeah… penis beams. This was by far the best episode of the new season for me and I already want to rewatch it. Damn you, live stream. I feel like I’m just sort of rambling here though. Comedy, action, pew pew, explosions… who knew? The plot is not the most inspired out there… girls are powerful espers feared by society and Minamoto will be the one to treat them like normal girls again blah blah but honestly, if every episode features this level of awesomeness, they could make it about baking pies for all I care.
