Wagaya No Oinara-sama #01 — Much Ado About Nothing

April 7th, 2008

25 minutes to cover what other shows do in 25 seconds.

Impressions:

Good lord was this episode boring. I understand that some shows may not want to immediately jump right in to the action/comedy/whatever, but come on… Let’s have a hook, a pull, do freaking something to draw my attention. Ten minutes… and that’s without an OP and I was watching the clock, waiting for something to happen. Production values were all boringly average. I could have amused myself if they had been terrible, or if they had occasionally been good, said something there, but nothing. I’m not sure you could have made this any more… well… average. It’s easy to talk about good or bad things… but nondescript things?

I guess that I did like Tenko’s vocal work. Despite being a fox eared, busty cream puff, she doesn’t come across as cloying in the slightest. Arrogant, powerful, in control, etc etc. It does clash with the visuals somewhat, but I’ll take an angry hauty foxgirl over Kanokon’s sexpot and day of the week. Hopefully she’ll stay this way… or maybe just be like Ranma and abuse her chest for personal gain. The male side didn’t show up at all in the episode… so perhaps it’ll get more girly and irritating once that does, but for now, it was the only thing that really stood out.

The action was pretty awful as well, especially coming off watching Nabari. Evil snake woman showed up and played wiffleball with Tenko for two pitches and then got washed away. That was around 18 minutes in and the most interesting thing that happened. It looked like it’d get good when she summoned her sword, but then she just hit an energy ball with it and posed like that for about a minute and a half while the conversation continued.

Conclusion… like I said… it’s hard to say anything about this show, positive or negative aside from "nothing happened." I feel like 25 minutes has been sucked out of my life and left no lasting impression whatsoever. I don’t hate it, but I certainly can’t bring myself to say that I like it either. Compared to Nabari, this was just really really lacking. I may give it another shot next week and possibly put it on the "quick summary" schedule since it is the weekend when I have more time, and next week’s preview seems to be more action oriented which was where the 95% of the maybe-amusing part of the episode came from (the other 5% was the priestess in the luggage rack at the end) but really… meh.

Preview:

Boy fox comes out to play.

Hey, where’s your Code Geass R2 review?

LAst time I checked, Aroduc has a low opinion of Geass.

  • Demon Eyes says:

Luggage-Rack-Priestess is looking tsun-tsun and delicious there.

Might watch it if just for her.

    Re: Geass

Wasn’t planning on touching it (or Da Capo II for that matter). I never finished watching the first season. I got to the part where the power creep started spiralling out of control after all the BS with Mao, amnesia suddenly becoming a communicable disease, etc, and just gave up.

Omni got da sh!t (CG & DCII) covered.

But after 1 week, what series you plan on doing?

  • Gil says:

Forgot to add….that fox “person” a guy in the preview?

  • Aroduc says:

I’ll figure that out on Friday after the second crop of Thursday stuff airs, though honestly, I’m not really -that- enthusiastic about any of ’em.

  • Gil says:

Who’s designing the artwork? It looks similar….like rental magica….
