Real Drive #01 — Ghost in the LeMU

April 8th, 2008

Okay, now where’s Major Tsugumi?

Impressions:

Apparently Tuesday is the day for wonky music in shows. The background music here was something else. It’s like they poached the incidental themes from a ballet, or maybe from Disney’s Phantasia. Whenever you try to insert a bassoon riff and think it works, there are issues. There’s a reason that the flute and clarinet are not the primary instruments in musical scoring these days. It didn’t just feel overblown, it really felt like someone had rented the entire London Philharmonic and decided that they needed to use every single instrument, even the oboe. Especially the oboe.

It’s extremely well animated though. If you want to see an actual martial arts scene choreographed and directed well, the fight at 7:30 or so is a great example. No spastic camera work, no random exposition in the middle of it, just well done action that you were encouraged to actually watch instead of being overwhelmed. The show also didn’t shy away from being bloody and gory at the start. Watching the rope dig through the guy’s arm and the muscle spill out was… icky let’s say. There was some really weird fanservice shoehorned in. One panty shot out of nowhere, another woman lounging around in a cocktail dress with her chest spilling out all over the place (and for that matter disproportionately off-center), a closeup on another girl’s ass, etc, and that’s not even touching the rough and tumble with the woman in a soaking wetsuit. It’s not excessive though, just curious and a little out of place.

All that said, this really isn’t my kind of show. I’m just not that big a fan of science fiction, intrigue, or random philosphical ramblings on the meaning of existence given your underwater virtual reality machine, so I’m going to still steer clear. There’s still a lot to like if you’re into these kind of shows though, so I certainly wouldn’t hold it against anybody if they were a fan.

No OP this episode, nor any next episode preview for that matter. Just Kanae Oki (Aoi’s VA) talking about her character. *shrug* I’m not holding out on you. There just wasn’t anything there.

6 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • Hinano says:

Is this the show where all the females have fat legs? lol

  • Aroduc says:

Actually, yes. That thought did occur to me more than once. They’re all a little more on the heavyset side than normal for some reason. The men are all buff and sleek though. *wink wink nudge nudge*

  • Axelion says:

Bahh, When i saw LeMU, I thought it’s like the anime of ever17.

  • HowardDuck says:

The fight scene was pretty generic, that’s not good direction but rather uninspired storyboarding.

  • Aroduc says:

Actually, that doesn’t have anything to do with storyboarding at all. ^^

  • white says:

if you don’t know who is Masamune Shirow, it’s because you only watch anime for childs :D
