Himitsu ~ Top Secret #01 — Elevator Buttons

April 8th, 2008

I get distracted very easily.

Impressions:

Sorry for the cap quality. I got tired of waiting and just snatched it off NND.

This episode had arguably the funniest production error that I’ve ever seen. Two people get into an elevator, and there’s just a down button. No up button. Just a down button. Apparently once you go down, YOU NEVER COME BACK. Outside of the elevator is normal, up and down are fine… but once inside… YOU’RE FINISHED. You’re taking the stairs to go back up. Who knows, maybe there’s a reasonable explanation for it, but I just found it very very silly.

Animation and artwork was fine. Nothing really interesting or impressive, but nothing terribly awful either. We continued the Tuesday tradition of off-kilter music, though not as much as Real Drive or Crystal Blaze. They decided to use a military march during the denouemont for reasons I don’t think I even want to contemplate. Otherwise though, it was more or less standard faire.

Still, I prefer my noir to have twins and giant squid. I have to admit that I wasn’t expecting the first episode of a "brain/memory investigation" show to have the brain investigation squad thwarted by the victim’s husband stealing her brain. It’s not even like he killed her and then immediately stole the brain. Her brain made it into a cooler and was in transport when the amazing detective decided to feed the petunas with the contents of his stomach, letting the husband run off with the car and the brain. I guess it did provide us with the amusing picture of a man crying and hugging the cooler holding his wife’s brain, but that doesn’t make up for the silliness. Besides which, he wasn’t even guilty, he just didn’t want it to be all poked and prodded and whatnot. I did like that they at least hinted that there might be a twist or the memory was deceiving them, even if it ended up just being a momentary red herring. Whose-his-face, the vomity detective, thought maybe she was really attacked from behind and they’d be able to see the attacker in his reflective sunglasses, but no. I assume they’ll do more with that later, though I’m pretty sure it’ll just end up being the anime version of Minority Report at the very best (or worst depending on your tastes).

Like I said about Real Drive, this really isn’t my kind of show regardless of other merits. Still, it wasn’t anywhere near as solidly done or interesting. There were also absolutely no hints in at least this episode of any kind of greater plot beyond individual cases each episode and the characters were purposefully as uninteresting as they come. It’s hard to slam it for portraying boring everymen as boring everymen, but I’m certainly not going to praise it for "a tour de force in showing how boring police investigations really are."

So, yeah… another one of those shows that I don’t really have too much interest in to begin with and don’t really know what to say about it. The ED hints strongly at some yaoi in the future though, so… *wink wink nudge nudge*

  • Hinano says:

Why do you torture yourself with these shows xD

  • He does it for us. Be grateful!

  • Aroduc says:

Pfft. You tortured yourself with Naruto for far longer. A half dozen shows 4 times a year is nothing.

    But one day…

    ONE DAY…

There will be something awesome that everybody will have overlooked entirely, and then who’ll be laughing?! ^^

It already happened two years ago.

  • Zeroblade says:

How does this guy have such impeccable penmanship?

  • Ronin8317 says:

For some irrational reason, the screencaps of the characters reminds me of Cromartie High School..

  • Shudr says:

    What about English subs?

  • Rubie says:

I have watched all the 25 episodes of “Himitsu” so far and I beg you all to be patient. The show gets better and better! It sort of reminds me of “the Ghost in the Shell”–Maki, stoic and beyond perfect leader of the section, with the dark past overlaps with the image of the Major Kusanagi in TGTS.
