Golgo 13 #01 — Flipbook Theater

Animation budgets are apparently for chumps.

Impressions:

Ugh. This was just awful. It’s like they took the manga, dropped the panels on screen and then just animated the mouths. There’s next to no movement what so ever outside of the CG cars, CG grass, or CG ELEVATOR FLOOR INDICATORS and what little other movement the show has is usually done in slow motion. Even during the gunfight in the hotel, the most animated thing was Duke throwing his floozy into a closet. Everything else was done through slow motion or people teleporting to and from behind cover. When people are… say… sitting around a Mah Jong board, not much animation is expected. When they’re engaged in pitched gunfights, you expect a little more than them standing 5 feet away from one another like cardboard cutouts until they all fall over.

Speaking of his floozy, yes, he had sex with her. You can tell because there were about 60 seconds of moaning while it showed stills of a woman in the throes of passion. I think. It’s a little hard to tell because one of the stills was Duke just laying there looking bored. I can sympathize with the feeling. I was pretty bored and getting distracted by the Daily Show as I was trying to watch this too. I guess if you feel weak in the knees by watching burly men stare at eachother in displays of raw manliness, then all the best to you. I’d suggest sticking to the manga personally. Watching this was basically the same thing anyway. There’s sticking to the source, and then there’s leaving it as lifeless images on a page. This is unfortunately firmly in the realm of the latter.

3 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • Tsu-kun says:

Sorry, I couldn’t stop laughing after the CG grass comment…who’s producing this again?

  • Aroduc says:

“The Answer Studio.” Same people who did Flag.

  • Ravage says:

Hmm, yeah. I remember Flag having a LOT of CG as well, but not of a bad quality.
So is the CG here Flag-level or CGonzo-level?

I’ll let this show slide anyway, probably. My viewing schedule is already packed full of other spring series. :p
