Vampire Knight #02 — Death By Chocolate
April 14th, 2008
Mmmmmm chocolate and blood.
Impressions:
I really hope they get this whole "Zero is a vampire" thing over and done with soon. Or maybe there can be a twist… Zero is a werewolf that also drinks blood. Or something. They’re certainly bludgeoning us over the head with the fact that he’s lusting after Yuuki’s vital fluids. I’m actually more interested in the vampiric powers that the night class showed in their little Mexican standoff with Zero. Apparently vampires have various powers over the elemental forces of nature. I have no problems with that, but it just reminded me quite a bit of Tsukiyomi and its kind of weird "every vampire has a unique power" motif.
Otherwise, an alright episode. Not stellar, not horrible. The Valentine’s day thing went predictably from start to finish and seemed like it was just there to fill in the time between Zero convulsing with bloodlust. I am curious as to why both he and Yuuki have no problems being half-naked around eachother. I’m fine with it… just curious. They’ve only known eachother for about four years and that was already well into the point where girls and guys know about cooties and such. Well, maybe Yuuki has jaded Zero by displaying her body for him constantly and that’s why he drives off the other girls. That and the fact that he wants to slit their throats and lap and their necks. Yum yum.
Isn’t it sad, Zecchin?
Zero convulses and drops a blood tablet into the sink and washes it away. A vision of a bloodstaned woman flashes through his mind.
Kaname enjoys his blood wine alone.
The girls are all spazzing out because an important day is coming… the day of confessions, Valentine’s Day. The guys of the day class are a bit down because the night class gets all the attention. Yuuki and her friend chitchat about who they’re giving chocolates too. Yuuki says nobody, but she’s got a chocolate magazine open. Zero glares at her and makes a snide remark. The rest of the class tries to pick on him too.
Later, Zero and Yuuki meet with the chairman about the hassle of Valentine’s day. Zero wants it just banned outright, but the chairman reminds him that not all vampires are enemies of human kind. Even if it’s impossible, he wants Zero to understand this. The mood gets horrible, so Yuuki gives Zero and the chairman their Valentine’s Presents… coupons for massages… the same thing she’s given them since junior high.
Yuuki grabs Zero and runs off. She remember back to meeting Zero for the first time. His family was slaughtered by vampires. Her father leaves her to take care of him while he deals witht he police. She takes him to the bath and removes his jacket to see that his neck is drenched in blood. After washing it off, she realizes that he wasn’t bitten, but even then, his eyes made her extremely sad.
The next day, the girls are assaulting the Night Classes dorms as usual.
The vampires make chitchat inside and prepare to head out.
Yuuki calls all the girls to attention. One tries to scale the wall and falls backwards. Zero appears to catch her and save her from damage, but he glares at them all and chases them away, earning the spite of the girly girls.
The gates open and the night class walks out. Yuuki gets trampled, while Zero just glares at them. The vampires go through all their usual tribulations to the fawning fangirls. They stop and look back at Zero. Kaname goes over to him and asks him how long this will continue. Zero looks surprised for a moment, but then reminds the vampires that he’s in charge as they leave.
Yuuki wonders about it for a moment, but decides it’s nothing.
In her kitchen, Yuuki makes chocolate thingies while thinking of Kaname. Zero watches her from the doorway, but soon leaves. The sound of Yuuki causing a culinary disaster soon follows.
As Zero walks through the dark halls, he clutches at his chest and collapses. The chairman shows up and tells him that no matter how hard he tries, he won’t be able to resist for much longer. He offers Zero a blood tablet and water, but Zero slaps them away. The chairman warns him that this can’t go on… but Zero already knows that.
At sunset, Yuuki and her friend chat about chocolates, but she has to admit that her’s is storebought as all the ones she made were disasters. Zero makes a snide remark, but she tells him to leave her alone and she looks a bit surprised. Fangirls run by to go begin the siege on the night class, so Zero and Yuuki follow.
As they walk, Yuuki wonders what the animosity between Zero and Kaname is all about, but shakes it off as nothing.
The night class walks out and Yuuki calls all the girls to attention and explains the proceedings.
The day class is all lined up at their gates and the night class is to go to the right gate for chocolates. No playing around is permitted. Aidou runs off, but Kaname warns him to not cross the line.
Yuuki declares a start and the chocolate giving proceeds. Some of the vampires are more reluctant than others. Even the female vampires get some chocolates. Aidou has to be warned away from taking any more than just chocolates. Kaname gets his chocolate, but once his hands are full, he apologizes and leaves. He says goodbye to Yuuki, who realizes that she didn’t get to give him her chocolate. She gets trampled just then and her chocolate falls on the ground. Zero tosses it to Kaname who thanks Yuuki and wanders off.
Yuuki gets all uppity and punches at Zero for being so direct with it. She’s happy inside though. Zero stares at Yuuki’s neck and feels something… then quickly walks off. Yuuki thinks about how Kaname saved her.
Kaname gives all the chocolates to his assistant to throw away, keeping only Yuuki’s for himself.
Yuuki turns back to Zero, only to find him gone.
At the stable, Zero is struggling to keep himself together. The girl he saved earlier appears with a chocolate for him, but he yells at her to leave until she runs off.
At night, Yuuki wonders where Zero went.
The night class is enjoying their chocolates and letters.
Zero paces around. Suddenly a group of vampires surround him. They demand to know why Kaname is so interested in him. Kain tries to put his hand on Zero, but gets thrown to the ground instead. Zero challenges the vampires, and then all summon their abilities and get ready to fight.
Just then, Yuuki appears and yells at all of them for fighting on school grounds. The vampires say that it’s not worth this and leave peacefully. Yuuki demands to know what Zero was thinking, but he just walks away.
Yuuki thinks to herself that he’s changing and becoming even more different.
In the apparently co-ed bathroom, Zero sits by himself, half dressed. Yuuki comes in and dresses him while telling him if anything is the matter, he can always tell her. She even has a special chocolate for him. The only one of her batch that came out well. She sticks it in his mouth and tells him that he should be thankful. He just glares at her. She pouts, and he stares at her lips, mouth, and neck. He puts his hand on her should, but then gets up and tells her to leave him alone and leaves. As he goes, Yuuki finds a blood tablet where he was sitting and wonders why he’d have something like that.
The night class meets with Kaname who tells them that the time is fast approaching.
Zero tries to bring himself to drink the blood wine, but coughs and puts the glass down.
