Absolutely Lovely Children #03 — Minamoto-han no AHO!

April 19th, 2008

Aoi’s accent shouldn’t amuse me as much as it does.

Impressions:

Another decent episode, though still nowhere near as awesome as the first. I can’t complain though because they’re still moving right along. Minamoto enjoys a beer and goes to sleep, only to be woken up by a SWAT team breaking in. He calls for assistance, but they’re actually just Esper-proofing his home. Why they had to do it in the middle of the night without warning is beyond me. The Children plan to move in with him, but when they start rooting through his stuff, Shiho takes a look into his yearbook (the limiters were turned off because of the SWAT break-ing) and sees his bad school memories. He walks in on them looking at that and basically chases them out, yelling at them to go home.

They wander around town while he yells at BABEL. After being chased away from an arcade for being level 4s (minus 3 because of the limiters), they find a floating feather which leads them to a TK Esper bankrobber. They let themselves be taken hostage, but he eventually figures out that they’re espers and tries to recruit them, calling them comrade and whatnot. Evil Squirrelman is lurking in the background, assumably the cause of the feather. Shiho eventually spills the beans to the other two about why Minamoto was so tetchy about them poking at his yearbook around the same time that Minamoto decides to release their limiters and trust them. Aoi teleports the four Espers to Minamoto’s apartment where Kaoru beats on the dude for a bit before he calls them monsters. As she loses her concentration, he tries to jump out the window… which is now reinforced to be Esper-proof and simply brains himself on it.

As he’s taken away, the Children load up and get ready to go back to BABEL, but Minamoto stops them and tells them that their home is here now. Smiles and hugs all around.

Like I said, a decent episode covering Minamoto’s OH SO TRAGIC HIGH SCHOOL YEARS. I liked the break-in, and that Kugimiya Rie evil squirrelman showed up again, but the villain was pretty lame and looked like he was stoned the entire time. Hopefully we won’t be revisiting the "evil esper tries to recruit the girls" again any time soon. Minamoto’s backstory was pretty… lame… but then again, he’s a pretty lame guy. At least he goes home and enjoys a beer, even if he’s one of those heathens who drinks out of cans. Labatts for life, yo. I also did enjoy Kaoru peaking up the skirts of the hostage girls as they floated in midair. I so made a joke about that in Rental Magica about 2 months ago.Glad to see someone’s on the same wavelength. Hovering and skirts are not a good combination for the modest. I also liked that they used the receptionist duo. More super powers is more good times. Yeah, they looked a bit creepy with the hollow glowing eyes, but that’s a good thing.

Next week looks like it’ll be focused on whose-her-face the other TK esper at BABEL. The preview showed, among other things, Kaoru lusting after her and her in a more adult version of the Children’s ‘battle’ costume.

I think Aoi’s accent is supposed to be that amusing.
