Kyouran Kazoku Nikki #02 — Magical Girl Lyrical Hyouka

April 19th, 2008

I think she forgot to put on a shirt.

Impressions:

I lasted doing a normal summary until about when Kyouka opened her mouth and started ranting. That sapped my will to write something fierce, but compared to last week, the episode as a whole was nowhere near as exhausting. The main focus was on Yuuka and her troubles with school bullies. Whatever. Maybe it’s because of Shigofumi, but I’m kind of getting tired of this whole bully thing. I did get a chuckle out of Hyouka in a dress. What’s the point of putting a cape of Teika though? A disguise? That’s even worse than the glasses on Clark Kent. It’s a talking lion. How many of them can there be in that city? It’s not like the cape is the defining characteristic here.

I’m far far more interested in the crazed goth girl at the end of the episode. Well, I would be more interested if if the OP didn’t show that she’s going to be joining the family and apparently Gekka’s buddy in his general escapades. Oh well, I’m sure she’ll be at least entertainingly crazy for an episode before learning to love life and submitting herself to Kyouka. I still wonder why Minamoto does feel strange about marrying a ‘woman’ that is about 4 feet tall. Even that’s assuming that he’s a decently tall guy too. She comes up to about his waist in that last shot.

Quick Summary:

At school, Yuuka gets too nervous to introduce herself. Then she breaks the chalk as she’s writing her name. She tries to run to her desk, but another student moves his to trip her.

At home, Kyouka is ranting as usual about having a proper wedding. Yuuka lurks outside, but steels herself and runs in to join the fun. Teika isn’t convinced for a moment and privately asks her about her scratched up knees. She tries to brush him off, but trips and her books with insults spill out. She runs off as he tries to tell her to ask for help.

Preparations for the wedding party continue about as you’d expect. Ouka is worried about Yuuka though. Likewise, Teika and Hyouka have planted a cam on Yuuka’s backpack and observe her being bullied. Kyouka tells him that’s normal for one of Enka’s children. They all have their troubles. The wedding cake is the important thing now. Teika and Hyouka run off as they keep arguing.

They track Yuuka to where she’s being beat up and her hands stomped. Hyouka stops Teika from interfering, remembering what Ouka told her yesterday. The bullies eventually wander off, and they run to Yuuka’s aid. She tells them that she’s fine now. Ouka walks up and demands to know what happened from the other two. Yuuka tells him that it’s not their fault and she just wants to be happy/laugh with them all now.

At home, Ginka and Kyouka gorge and continue their general fun. Ouka tries to talk to Yuuka, but she’s locked her door and isn’t letting them in. She also left a letter thanking them all and saying goodbye to them all. Kyouka takes control of the situation and has Hyokka destroy the door. They find Yuuka inside, sobbing and saying how she should die. Hugs. Talk about them all loving her. Jellyfish floating. Kyouka declaring revenge.

The next day, Gekka and Teika harass all the guys at school while Kyouka laughs like the megalomaniac that she is. This was all planned to let Yuuka save her classmates. Including a ‘transformation’ into Magical Girl Hyouka to ‘fight off’ Teika and Gekka. This episode got weird fast.

Midarezaki Yuka SLAAAAAAAASH!

Kyouka gets patpatted by Ouka for her good plan and Yuuka returns to the class as a hero.

At the wedding party, there’s terrible singing, overblown festivities, the works. Ouka is far too nonchalant about marrying someone under half his height.

The bullies get a final lesson about Midarezaki Yuuka from an evil goth girl.

The legend of the lovely eyepatch.

It looks like Crazy Goth Girl #1 will be Chika (Yuuka’s biological sister), the final member of Kyouka and Ouka’s crazy family (working on second-hand information here, since I never knew about the novels until the adaptation). And, uh, I think the dubious honor of ‘turning’ her is Ginka (Mr. Gender-confused), not Kyouka.

Tch, too bad my novel budget’s been drained for the month.
